Cannabis Situation Still Looks Foggy For Food

At a time when some say the CBD market is poised for explosive growth, the food, beverage and agriculture industries may face issues similar to ones dealt with in other plant-based foods: mycotoxin and other crop quality concerns, interstate commerce and reliable ingredient suppliers in addition to food safety issues.

MWFPA, 900+ Food & Ag Groups Call For Approval Of USCMA
MWFPA joined more than 900 food and agriculture companies and associations today in requesting the U.S. Senate and House leadership to move quickly to approve the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Signatories noted that, “USMCA will benefit the U.S. agriculture and food industry while providing consumers a more abundant supply of high-quality, safe food at affordable prices . . . USMCA builds on the success of the NAFTA agreement, and will ultimately lead to freer markets and fairer trade.”

Other manufacturing and agriculture organizations signing onto the letter include the American Frozen Food Institute, the Illinois Manufacturers Association, Grocery Manufacturers Association, and the Minnesota AgriGrowth Council.

Deadlines Set for FDA To Establish Reporting Requirements for “High-Risk” Foods

A consent decree that requires FDA to designate “high risk” foods by September 2020 and publish the record keeping requirements by November 2022 will set into motion new traceability demands under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Read more here .

Bill Would Halt Food Mergers & Acquisitions

A bill introduced in Congress would put an indefinite moratorium on large mergers in agribusiness and food processing and retailing.

The Food and Agribusiness Merger Moratorium and Antitrust Review Act,(S.3404/H.R.6800) was introduced by Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Representative Mark Pocan (D-WI).

WI Budget Committee Passes Transportation Proposal, Doesn’t Raise Gas Tax

Th e WI legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance has approved a transportation proposal that would provide $393 million in new revenue through fee based increases in addition to $90 million in a one-time general fund transfer. The measure passed on a 11 to 5 vote with Republican Senator Duey Stroebel voting opposed along with committee Democrats against the Republican transportation motion.

Budget Committee Completes WI Spending Plan

The WI Legislature's budget writing Joint Finance Committee (JFC) has completed its work on the 2019-21 state spending plan. The committee approved the amended version of the budget 12-4 along party lines.

The budget blueprint now goes to the full Legislature for approval before the June 30 fiscal year deadline. After budget passage in the full Legislature, the budget will go to Gov. Tony Evers, who has six days to act on the bill. The governor has the option to sign the budget, veto the entire budget, or line-item veto certain provisions.

The Committee completed its work by including a tax plan providing a $322 million middle class tax cut, with the majority of the credit going to individuals with incomes of $150,000 or less. The motion passed 12-4 along party lines and includes vapor products in the definition of tobacco products and impose an excise tax on vapor solution effective October 2019.
MWFPA's Culotta Attends lL Agribusiness Roundtable

Since his appointment as President of MWFPA in May, Jason Culotta has been on a whirlwind tour of member facilities, meeting with our board of directors individually, marketing the association to potential new recruits and attending various food industry functions.

At left is Jason along with with Dr. Alaina Kanfer from the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of IL. The two were attending the IL Farm Bureau's Agribusiness Roundtable recently which brought together representatives from throughout the food and agriculture industries for a day of information and networking. Each year, the roundtable focuses on a central theme, hearing from company representatives on topics like sustainability, animal welfare, ingredient sourcing and more.
