The MY HERO Journalism & Filmmaking Workbook is a comprehensive guide to creating hero-themed films. With step-by-step instructions, and essential resources, the workbook simplifies the process of filmmaking and gives storytellers of all ages an opportunity to be heard.

The book is written by Jonah Steinhart, in collaboration with renowned educator and author Esther Wojcicki. Wojcicki has played a pivotal role in inspiring the next generation of journalists. She founded the Journalism Education Program, which received national acclaim, at California’s Palo Alto High School. She is, also, the author of two inspiring books that promote project-based learning and fostering independence and critical thinking skills. Wojcicki also offers the annual ‘WOJ’ Youth Reporter Award at the MY HERO International Film Festival.

Jonah Steinhart, a former student of Wojcicki, is recognized as an outstanding journalism and film educator in the San Francisco Bay Area. His expertise and dedication have played a significant role in making this workbook a valuable resource for aspiring filmmakers. Steinhart also had support from a team of media arts educators and the MY HERO team.

MY HERO Journalism & Filmmaking Workbook

The workbook explains the entire filmmaking process — from developing a workable concept to screening the finished product. It is a product of The MY HERO Project’s Media Arts Education Programs and was created with generous support from The Scripps Family Impact Fund, whose commitment to advancing education in the media arts has been integral to the project.

Global Educator Esther Wojcicki

Wojcicki will feature the MY HERO Journalism and Filmmaker Workbook at THE SHOW @ASU+GSV Conference and Summit, which takes place April 5-7 in San Diego, California. The Summit is a joint project between Arizona State University and Global Silicon Valley that brings together educators, edtech experts and investors interested in funding new educational ventures. Wojcicki will be presenting at the conference.

She will speak on Why Teaching Kids to Create Videos Builds Critical Thinking Skills, It Also Happens to be FUN. Copies of the workbook will be available at the Summit.

The annual MY HERO International Film Festival is a great place to showcase your new filmmaking skills and compete for cash prizes. There are categories for Peace, Activism, Ocean Conservation and more. Submissions are being accepted for the 2025 festival.

We give prizes and awards to students of all age, and professional filmmakers. Short films, of ten minutes and under, are accepted in all genres.
