MYC After School Program Updates!

April showers are almost over; May flowers are already in bloom, and so are our programs at the MYC. As a reminder, all participants must be a Milford resident and/or attend Milford Schools, to fill out a registration form to be a member (8-18 yr olds) and participate in programming.

The first floor gym, game room and lounge are open for the kids to use freely every day and we have at least three structured programs daily for May, except for Fridays, where kids are given a more free flowing atmosphere, and open gym dominates the day. We will continue to run homework room, nutrition, career and college advising (where we offer extended guidance counseling for teens who want help with their FAFSA, college application, resumes, and job applications), crafts, JAG (the Juvenile Advocacy Group), Sewing, CrossFit, Trek Adventure, Bucket Drumming, Taste Exploration, and Pokémon club. New programming this month will include: woodworking, guided computer lab, and yoga. We are also still looking for models for our fashion show. Girls and boys alike are encouraged to join us. If you would like to participate and are 18 or under (we even have some two year old's), please contact us. We are always open to new ideas and search for volunteers who would like to run a program or help monitor. Contact Christine Daddario,
[email protected] , 508-473-1756 if you would like to volunteer.

As a reminder, all participants must be a Milford resident and/or attend Milford Schools, to fill out a  registration form  to become a member. Once this form is returned to the Center, the member will be provided with a key tag and ID number. This will be how the Youth Center staff will track attendance. Therefore, all members are required to bring in their key tag in order to enter the facility. If key tag is lost, the Center will charge $1.00 for replacement. You can find out all up-to-date info at our  website .

Thank you, Stacy Middle School, Woodland Elementary, and Memorial Elementary for allowing us to come in to do outreach and recruit for our fashion show last month!

THANK YOU to Milford Regional Hospital for running this program. We are so happy to be collaborating with a partner in our community that is an advocate for the health of our youth. CrossFit is the first of many programs the hospital plans to run at the Milford Youth Center. Click here for video of the kids using the agility ladder!
  Yoga at the MYC!

We are excited to announce a new program; Yoga for Kids, sponsored by the Milford Regional Medical Center.  This is a continuing collaboration between Milford Hospital and the Youth Center, that started with our CrossFit program. The class will be led by Cindi Scrimgeour from Ahimsa Yoga Studio in Milford. Classes will take place on Wednesdays in May, beginning on the 17th and continue on Mondays in June. The schedule will be as follows:
  • Wednesdays: May 17th, May 24th, May 31st

MYC Kid's Play: 0-5 Play Group!

We are very happy to announce a program like no other we have had at the MYC before; the MYC Kid's Play will be starting at the MYC this  Thursday May 4th.  It will be a children's play group for parents and/or guardians to bring their kids to play, craft, and socialize! The groups will run everything Thursday morning from 9:30 am to 11:30. Each session will include activities such as circle time, free play, crafts, snack, story time, and clean up! There is a requested donation of $5 per family per session, so the MYC can continue and expand groups like these. Come on down and bring your child to run and play while adults socialize and meet other families in the community!

THANK YOU Benjamin Moore & Co.!

On behalf of the Milford Youth Commission and MYC staff, we would like to thank Benjamin Moore & Co. of Milford, and specifically Scott Kaplan, Distribution Center Manager, for organizing a volunteer project in the basement of the Youth Center! Employees of Benjamin Moore came on multiple days over the last few months to paint the entire floor and ceiling of the basement! In addition they painted our boxing room, painting all the polls "foul-line yellow" and put up a replica wall of the "Green Monster" adjacent to our batting cages! Benjamin Moore stored the wall for us during the renovation and we are so excited to have it finally up! The wall was actually used in a commercial in NY! This project, valued at over $15,000 of materials and labor has transformed the basement, allowing it to be available in time for batting cage rentals, CrossFit and so much more! It will also help with the general maintenance of the building!   It's due to the generosity of local businesses and individuals that we are able to continue to offer free after school programming, an affordable summer camp, and provide a safe and fun environment for the youth of Milford!

MYC/JAG Relay for Life Team!

The JAG Youth Council decided that they wanted to participate in Milford's Relay for Life on May 12th to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much.

Shout out to one of our Relay for Life participants, EarlWilson! He has already raised $160 for our team that will go to the American Cancer Society. Great job, Earl!!

The Youth Center staff attended the annual "United Way Recognition Breakfast" at the Sheraton Hotel in Framingham. We were so pleased to help congratulate Ron Taylor, who was recognized as the United Way of Tri-County 's "Volunteer of the Year" Finalist! Ron is an active volunteer here at the MYC, and you can find him in the building on most days: doing a project, helping out with the kids, or giving the staff some wisdom of the ages. Milford Youth Center (MYC) mission  is to provide a safe environment that promotes self esteem, builds character, and fosters the notion of community and the importance of respecting and serving others. For more information, click here .

Juvenile Advocacy Group (JAG) mission is to work with its community partners to bring resources together to prevent substance abuse and address other emerging needs in the community. The Massachusetts communities included in JAG's service area are the towns of Milford, Bellingham and Hopedale. Through JAG's programs and services youth and their families are able to gain the information and resources to help live and lead healthier lives.

The  MYC & JAG work together to provide resources and opportunities for youth to make healthy decisions. The MYC & JAG have worked to provide local youth with the necessary activities and events that help them develop physically, mentally, socially and emotionally through their childhood years. By providing Milford youth with these types of programs and a safe environment during the after school hours and during our monthly events, we hope to address adolescent risk factors as well as promoting the partnership among community members to ensure a comprehensive vision and plan for the health of the youth in the town of Milford.
