In light of the sharp increase of COVID-19 cases across the county and city of Sterling Heights, the City and the Parks and Recreation Department has made the difficult decision to pull back on some of our programming and close certain amenities.
Effective Nov. 16, 2020, drop-in style sports programs at the Community Center will be cancelled through the end of 2020. These programs include pickleball, futsal, basketball, volleyball, dodgeball, badminton, and table tennis. Athletic leagues including the Sterling Heights Youth Basketball league have also been cancelled for the season. The Youth Basketball league will be looking to offer an instructional skills program beginning in January. The re-opening of the Senior Center track, gym, and cardio room will also be delayed until at least Jan. 4, 2021. The focus of remaining programs will be those in which proper social distancing can be achieved. The walking track will remain open at this time.
The City will also be closing the following park amenities effective Nov. 16 ,2020, as social distancing cannot be achieved: basketball courts (Farmstead and Dodge Park), mini-soccer field in Dodge Park, and Skate Park at the Richard J. Notte City Center.
The decision to cancel activities and close facilities was not taken lightly, but is necessary to help control the spread of COVID-19 in our community.
