Affordable Adaptive Reuse Development in CT Reimagined
|
|
Yale Acres is a 1950’s affordable housing development of 47 multi-unit buildings totaling 162 homes in Meridien, Connecticut. These buildings were long past their prime and in 2018, the Meriden Housing Authority secured state funding to renovate and expand the homes to bring them up to modern standards.
MaGrann Associates served as the energy consultant and HERS rater to the project. We worked with the Meriden Housing Authority, the architect, Landmark Architects, and the prime contractor, Carabetta Companies, to ensure energy efficiency strategies were incorporated in the design and renovation of the buildings.
All the homes were comprehensively rehabilitated in the project. New energy-saving features include ENERGY STAR windows, spray-foam insulation, geothermal heating and cooling, LED lighting and ENERGY STAR appliances. Solar shingles were installed on the roofs of the buildings to offset electricity use and these homes now boast an average HERS score of 25!

Welcome to our newest Drexel University Co-op, Tim Curran! Tim is a third year student at Drexel University pursuing a Mechanical Engineering degree. MaGrann Associates is his first co-op experience since the COVID-19 pandemic put his first one on hold last year. So far, his favorite class at Drexel has been Thermodynamics.
Fun facts: Tim spends his free time on woodworking projects and loves to travel. He's been to all 50 states and loves to go skiing in the winter!
"I’m very excited about getting started here at MaGrann. I’m thankful for the opportunity and really believe working at Magrann Associates will give me a very broad scope of experience, from analysis to design and everything in between. “Making buildings better” is a key part of the future and I’m happy to be apart of the team here.”
