Giving Thanks, Looking Forward

.

We are so appreciative of you, our valued clients and partners, who brought us more opportunities than ever this year to have a positive impact on your businesses, on the lives of so many homeowners and residents, and of course on climate change mitigation. In over 40 years since our founding, there has never been a static or consistent market environment for our work at the leading edge of energy efficiency and green building. Funding, programs and regulation seem to go through cycles of more and less support or stringency, while the need for more housing in general, and more affordable housing in particular, continues to be a constant theme along with advances in our understanding of building science and availability of new technologies. As always, we will work to stay one step ahead so we can help you prepare for and leverage the changes to come, regardless of how or where they come from.

.

Thank you again for your partnership. We look forward to being here for you in 2025 and beyond as we work together to improve the quality of living for builders, owners and residents of the buildings people live in.

Phius Zero Project in the Spotlight

Another Passive House project, Hamilton at Eagleview, a 32-unit “eco-friendly living” community by the Hankin Group in Chester County PA, received some well-deserved attention in the Philadelphia Inquirer recently.

.

This exemplary Phius ZERO project – the first in Pennsylvania – opened in November and is a still-rare example of a market-rate development pursuing this highest level of energy/building performance certification.

.

MaGrann’s Director of Sustainability, Jon Jensen, is quoted extensively in the article emphasizing the benefits for both developers and residents, as well as the supporting role played by our team of sustainability experts. MaGrann congratulates the Hankin Group on its accomplishment – and for this important promotion of Phius ZERO as a value enhancing and eminently achievable standard.

EEA "Policy in Action" Conference

The Keystone Energy Efficiency Alliance (KEEA) and Energy Efficiency Alliance of New Jersey (EEA-NJ) held their largest ever annual policy conference in September, with over 250 attendees, a variety of panels related to this year’s “Policy in Action” theme, and exceptional keynotes by Keishaa Austin (DOE), Katie McGinty (Johnson Controls) and Brian Regli (PA Governor’s Office).

.

The conference planning committee was once again co-chaired by our own Ben Adams (VP of Strategic Development) along with Kyle Mann, President of ELEDLights. Ben also moderated a panel discussion around Perspectives on Decarbonization.

.

A new highlight this year was a PechaKucha session (20 slides auto-advancing at 20 seconds per slide) with eight speakers including Emma Raymont, MaGrann’s Director of Engineering, who presented on Challenges & Innovation in Multifamily Program Design.

MaGrann Launches Electric Advantage in Orange & Rockland Service Territory

Earlier this month, MaGrann, in partnership with subcontractor Rycor Heating & Cooling, launched the Electric Advantage program for Orange & Rockland Utilities in New York State.

   .

As an alternative to traditional gas main replacements, Orange & Rockland has initiated this program to identify opportunities to eliminate the need for gas main replacements. They are offering select residential and commercial customers generous incentive packages to facilitate their energy transition away from natural gas energy use. As program implementer, MaGrann will work with O&R to develop customized electrification plans, providing customers with electrical infrastructure upgrades, alternatives to natural gas equipment such as cold climate heat pumps and induction cooktops, weatherization upgrades, and more.

Heat Pumps Change Multifamily Landscape in NYC

. .

As New York works to improve its efficiency in the realm of infrastructure, MaGrann has been proud to partner with developers like The Arker Companies to identify and implement more efficient technology. One such project is with an apartment building on Loring Avenue in Brooklyn, NY where we have conducted a performance comparison between split terminal heat pumps (STHP) made by Fujitsu General America and the existing gas-fired packaged terminal air conditioner (PTAC) systems.

NJBPU Approves $3.75 Billion for Energy Efficiency Programs

On November 1st, MaGrann stood with President Christine Guhl-Sadovy and staff of the NJ Board of Public Utilities (BPU), the Energy Efficiency Alliance of New Jersey (EEA-NJ), PSE&G and other stakeholders at the NJ Capitol steps to celebrate the approval of massive funding for energy efficiency programs in NJ over the next three years!

.

Each year, MaGrann supports the participation of thousands of units under the new construction and existing building retrofit programs deployed by the BPU and NJ Investor Owned Utilities. MaGrann is also a founding member of EEA-NJ.

.

John Kolesnik, Policy Counsel noted “As a trade association representing New Jersey’s energy efficiency industry, EEA-NJ celebrates today’s decision to approve the Triennium II [Utility] programs. These programs represent over $3 billion in investments for industry—that’s $3.75 billion for slashing energy bills, creating jobs, and cutting emissions. With the addition of the ground-breaking Building Decarbonization Program, they represent a step forward for New Jersey towards a clean energy future.”  .

Company News

Electrification on the Road!

We are pleased to announce that MaGrann recently began the transition of our vehicle fleet to EVs with the purchase of a Hyundai Ioniq-5 SUV. Our team of field consultants rack up some 150-200,000 miles each year in company vehicles, making it the largest contributor to our Scope I carbon emissions. Moving to battery EVs is a high priority in our strategy to reduce our internal carbon footprint, but also a challenge given constraints on charger installation in many residential scenarios, and limited public charging facilities in some areas.

.

In 2020 MaGrann installed a bank of six Level 2 chargers at our head office in Mount Laurel NJ, offering free charging to employees to encourage personal adoption of EVs. We now look forward to continuing our transition to a fully electrified company fleet as existing vehicles are replaced. For any questions about our experience with charger installation, personal and company EVs, contact benadams@magrann.com.
