Maada'ookiing (“the distribution” in Ojibwe) is a Northland Foundation effort to strengthen relationships with Indigenous community, build partnerships with Native nations, and offer support for community members to expand capacity in northeastern Minnesota.
A grant opportunity will be offered three times per year, awarding up to $2,500 per grant for Tribal citizens, descendants, or those have kinship ties or affiliation to Indigenous communities within the foundation’s geographic service area. Grant applications are accepted anytime on the online grant portal. The next application deadline is May 15, 2023.

Maada'ookiing Grants Awarded
Congratulations & Miigwech to the March 2023 Grantees!
Sam Zimmerman: $2,500
To create a series of paintings celebrating Ojibwe constellations and seasonal teachings, design and create Ojibwemowin coloring pages, and exhibit and distribute the materials.
Lurinda DeFoe: $2,500
To hold a multi-day class teaching Fond du Lac youth about the traditional harvesting and use of wiigwaas, or birch bark.
Wendy Savage: $2,310
To develop a lecture on the history of Ojibwe moss bags and create an accompanying art activity book and art lesson instructing children on creating one.
Crystal Seelye: $2,500
To teach Indigenous youth about the history of ribbon skirts, and how to make their own.
Frank Goodwin: $2,500
To host a support group for Native American fathers, focusing on wellness, relationships, and parenting skills.
Keith Secola: $2,500
To develop and arrange two original songs, Electric 49 and Kokopelli Blues, for use in Junior and Senior High school band classes, to increase indigenous visibility and build capacity to teach native culture.
Fawn Sampson: $2,500
To host a strategic action meeting to develop a pilot project plan for an Arts and Culture Center in Grand Rapids, MN.

Maada'ookiing wins Responsive Philanthropy Award |
|
This past Dagwaagin (Fall), Maada'ookiing received the 2022 Mission Award in Responsive Philanthropy during a ceremony and luncheon held during the Minnesota Council of Non-Profits' annual conference in St. Paul.
According to the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits' website, "The Responsive Philanthropy Award recognizes the partnership between funders and nonprofits in mobilizing resources for public benefit."
At the awards ceremony, a beautiful video highlighting the work done by the Maada'ookiing community was debuted. Grantee Frank Goodwin and Board Members April McCormick, Mary Harrelson, and Baabitaaw Boyd appeared in a the video. Click to watch the video! Check this off your "to-do" list: don't forget to complete your Maada'ookiing Grant Final Report! These reports are a chance for grantees to reflect on the impact of their projects, and also provide our Grantmaking Staff and Maada'ookiing Board with valuable insights into the work and strength of our program.
Grantees will receive a Final Report email reminder 14 days prior to their due dates. We are more than happy to work with grantees if circumstances arise that change the timeline of your activities, or if you need an extension for any other reason.

The Northland Foundation’s geographic service area rests on ceded territory established by the Treaties of 1837, 1854, 1855, and 1866 between the Anishinaabe/Ojibwe Nations and the United States government. This region is the traditional homelands of the Ojibwe, Dakota, Northern Cheyenne, and other Native nations, and Indigenous people continue to live here. We humbly acknowledge that we are on traditional Indigenous land that holds a long history that continues to grow. Our relationships today shape and define our ongoing shared history. Together, we are actively building mutual respect based on trust and understanding. See a more detailed acknowledgement of this land and its history.
