Principal's Welcome

Welcome to MacArthur Middle School, home of the Marauders!

Find time this weekend to check your child's clothing! As an experienced middle school parent, in a few weeks, it will get colder and many kids will grab for their pants only to find that those pants are actually capris. I have had a few "double-takes" with some students this week because they look like they grew four inches since August. If you need to buy longer pants, no worries, Dick's Sporting Goods has a 20% off coupon for that is valid for this weekend only.

While the physical growth of our students is easier to see, our early reports from the Spring testing session shows that our kids are making great growth in reading, math, and English Language Arts. Many of our indicators are showing that the growth is more than "typical" growth, kind of like the growth spurt in height that you may see in your son or daughter!

One other quick reminder, we do have school on Monday, 10/9. If you need to report an absence, please do at 847-870-5375.

8th Grade ELA/SS

In 8th grade ELA, we have been finishing up our first unit in StudySync on Everyone Loves a Mystery. We have read both fiction, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson that had students analyze how traditions can impact our culture, and an informational text excerpt about Phineas Gage. This is a true story about a person who survived an iron shooting through his head and led to advancements in brain science. We will be starting our Holocaust unit soon by reading the memoir Night by Elie Weisel. In November, we will be taking a field trip to the IL Holocaust Museum. In Social Studies, students have already learned and passed their tests on the IL Government. We are now starting to explore our new textbook. Students did a gallery walk to learn about why we study history by reading quotes from various perspectives throughout history about its importance. And this week students will start learning about the Reconstruction time period in US history.

6th Grade Math

Many Sixth grade math students are currently focusing on writing, interpreting and evaluating numerical expressions to understand how to work with algebraic expressions. Additionally, some are also working on understanding that a proportional relationship is a relationship in which one quantity is a constant multiple of another.

Postive Behavior Supports

Today we drew some name for the Trimester mid-term raffle of PRIDE paw winners. Any student that has turned in a card is eligible for a prize. This year's prizes include bucket hats, tie-dye shirts, popsockets, and Cafeteria Sweet Treats(a coupon for a free cookie, ice cream, or chips). Great work, Marauders!

Sports Update

Our Marauders had a great showing at the Conference meet earlier this week. Our Varsity girls group finished in 1st place and they also won the Sportmanship Award! Both boys and girls teams travel to Libertyville this weekend for the Sectional meet.

***Additionally, tryouts for our basketball teams begin on October 17 & 18th.***

On September 23rd, a local resident, Jason Prempas, organized restoration work to the wetland area behind MacArthur as part of his Eagle Scout project.
