Principal's Welcome

Welcome to MacArthur Middle School, home of the Marauders!

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving break. We are now beginning the 2nd Trimester of the year in the classroom. Outside of the classroom, our basketball, pom, and cheer seasons. It has been a competitive season on the hardwood so far. Our poms and cheer teams are getting better each week, just in time for our conference Showcase event in January.

Over the next three weeks, all of our music programs will be showing off their hard work in the winter concert cycle. Please check out the flyer below for dates and information on their partnership with the Wheeling Food Bank.

Also, be sure to check out the Hersey Parent Night presentations geared towards high school and middle school parents!

It is a busy time of year and we are excited to share the experiences at school or livestreamed on our YouTube channel!

**Please refrain from entering the MacArthur parking lot for regular pick-ups until 2:40. This will allow the Sullivan parents to clear out of the lanes. As the weather gets colder, the number of car riders increases. There shouldn't be any conflicts if we use the parking lot from 7:40-8:00am in the morning and 2:40-3:00pm in the afternoon. Thank you in advance!!

Hersey Orchestra & Choir Visit

The Chamber Orchestra and Dickens Carolers from Hersey High School came by this week as a part of their winter road show as they prepare for their upcoming concert on December 15th. It was great to connect with our former Marauders as they talked to our current VIM students about the importance of being connected in school through clubs, organizations, and teams! I can't wait for Wheeling's Orchesis performance on the 12th! It will be great to connect with some of our Wheeling students then!

8th Grade Science

We are wrapping up our unit on Human Impact on Natural Resources and Global Climate Change. Students researched various factors causing global warming and analyzed opposing perspectives for the main cause of Climate Change - human activities or natural cycles. We have our final assessment over this unit on Thursday, December 8th.

One of the activities today was to look at mitigation solutions to an environmental issue through the lens of a mock city council meeting with various stakeholders.

The students are excited to wrap up this unit so that we can begin our next unit on Chemistry. Our Chemistry unit is very hands-on, so students should be prepared to be in the lab often. Please look for a safety contract which will be sent home on Friday, December 9th. This contract will describe the expectations for following lab safety procedures.

7th Grade Math

7th-grade math has been working through Unit 2 and Unit 3 where they were introduced to adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers and rational numbers. Students explored adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers on the number line and through modeling using integer chips. Students have had much success with this unit and have had fun ways to incorporate integer operations through games such as Integer Wars. We are also learning about how rational numbers could be written in different forms such as decimals and fractions. 7th-graders are introduced to rational numbers in decimals forms that either terminate or repeat and how to convert a fraction to a decimal through division.

Join us for a December Concert and bring some food!

Keeping us Safe with Hand Hygiene

We have seen an increase in the amount of absences this week due to illness. Some of the symptoms have included but are not limited to stomachache, headache, vomiting, and fever. Please be sure to monitor your child’s health over the next few days.
If your child is sick, please be sure to follow these guidelines:
  • If sick, children should remain at home until symptoms subside.
  • Children who develop a fever must remain home until fever-free for 24-hours.
  • Children who vomit must remain home for a 24-hour period following vomiting.
We are taking the following additional steps that ensure our school is a healthy and safe place for students with the following precautions:
  • Washing hands and using hand sanitizer as often as possible to minimize the spread of germs
  • Increased cleaning and disinfecting classrooms and bathrooms
  • Disinfecting high-touch point areas to minimize the spread of germs
  • Maximizing outside airflow through the HVAC system to ensure fresh air is filtered through our spaces
  • Masking continues to be optional. Masks are available in all school offices upon request.

The well-being of our school community will always be our number one priority. Thank you for doing your part to help keep our school community safe and healthy. We hope to keep this winter season as healthy as possible!
