Principal's Welcome

Welcome to MacArthur Middle School, home of the Marauders!

This past week has seen a lot of our former students and staff back in the building. It feels like home when Mrs. Hernandez or Mr. Malek stop by to see their old collegues. It energizes our office when high schoolers come back to perform or inform our current students. They were all part of the D23 family and still are! Later this month, we extend a welcome to you as we partner with your family for parent teacher conferences and Heritage Night.

Speaking of family, we have an addition to our family! Meet Maya, our 10 week old Sheppard/Pyrenees mix. It's been awhile since we had a puppy in the house so send your successful tips my way or tell me when you are in MacArthur next!

7th Grade Science

In 7th-grade science, during our recent Physical Science unit, students learned specifically about Changes in Force and Motion. The highlight was the hands-on project where they collaborated in groups to construct toy balloon cars. Throughout the unit, students explored the principles of Newton’s first and second law, delving into the relationship that acceleration has between mass and force. Engaging in the engineering design process, each group crafted a prototype for their balloon car and then modified it to enhance its speed and distance. Students shared their learnings on presentation day, where they not only showcased their revamped balloon cars but also delivered creative sales pitches to sell their innovative designs. It was a fun opportunity for our students to apply their knowledge in a practical setting, fostering teamwork, critical thinking, and creativity!

Up next, we will be studying Sir Isaac Newton's 3rd and final law: "For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction". Students are currently investigating this law by participating in various stations that demonstrate examples of the law with hands-on objects. We will culminate our physics units by completing another engineering project. Students will collaborate in groups to design, build, test, and improve a Rube Goldberg Machine, explaining how their creation incorporates and demonstrates the use of energy, forces, and all three of Newton's Laws.

Wheeling High School Orchesis

Yesterday, we hosted members of the Wheeling Orchesis Dance Team. The group came out to perform their dances and also demonstrate additional options for physical education at the high school. Four of the seven were once Marauders and returned back to perform for another generation of the D23 family.

Volleyball season is in full swing

The competition on the court this year has been tough. While the teams have won some games and lost some games, it seems like every score is close! Keep improving for that tournament in March!

Spelling Bee Finalists

Mrs. Brunner and Mr. Alms were the moderators for this years competition!

Congratulations to this year's finalists, advancing to the next round from MacArthur!

Julia Osiecki, Michael Eagles, Madeline Rosales, Krishiv Mahadik, and Isabella Baran

Wrestling prepares for the conference tournament

Our team has been doing well this year with a number of wrestlers improving in the dual meets and advancing in tournaments. Speaking of tournament, our Student Senate is organizing the concession stand and woudl appreciate any support you could provide to keep their costs down. Click on the link below to sign up and drop off some items at school by 2/15.

Mock Interviews with Wheeling Admin Team

The Wheeling High School Administrative team got to meet some of our Marauders through this recent round of Mock Interviews as a part of our Family & Consumer Science program. This is a unit where 8th graders prepare cover letters and resumes to prepare for a typical teen interview. No one knows teens better than our high school colleagues!

Mac PRIDE connects with Hersey SOS

The family continues with Chad Tramba, Brandon Pflomm, and Erin Menczywor coming back to talk to Marauders about all the activities to take advantage of in high school. If you are not recognizing that last name as a former Marauder, you are correct, Erin is the younger sister of one of our teachers, Samantha Menczywor, so she is still family even though she went to Trials!

Chicagoland Educators Orchestra

Our own, Izabella Gieron recently performed with a number of area educators in the Chicagoland Educators Orchestra! Check out the complete program here.

Jazz Festival

The MacArthur Jazz Band played great at the Jazz Festival this past weekend and seemed to have a lot of fun. They had a great performance and got to work with pros right after.

5 Essentials Parent Survey

We are excited to announce the launching of this year's 5Essentials Survey in the State of Illinois. We would love to hear your feedback! Please click the button below to fill out the survey.

The 5Essentials Survey provides insights into schools’ organizational strengths and areas of opportunity across the five essential factors for school improvement. We use the feedback from this survey to improve our school environment! Thank you in advance for taking time out of your already busy schedule to complete our survey.

State Assessments

There are many things synonymous with the winter months, including cold weather, winter sports, and warm drinks. Well, here at school the winter and spring months are synonymous with state testing. In our last newsletter, we focused on the State of Illinois's ACCESS Test for Multilingual Learners that is currently underway. Coming soon, students in grades 3-12 will be taking the Illinois Assessment of Readiness, which is a statewide test in English/language arts (ELA) and mathematics. The state uses this information to provide more support and resources to the schools in the greatest need. This year’s testing window is from March 4 to April 19. Your school will let you know of their chosen testing window within this timeframe as it approaches. An alternate version of the assessment is also available for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities as well.

In addition to this assessment, students in grades 5, 8, and 11 in the State of Illinois are also required to take the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA), which measures students progress in the area of science over time. Both the Illinois Assessment of Readiness in ELA and Mathematics and the Illinois Science Assessment are aligned with state standards in their subject areas.
