This is Administrative Professionals Week and Macedonia FACE is blessed to have a dynamic and talented Administrative Team. Thank you to their fearless leader, Carmen Ellington, Operations Manager, who keeps everything running smoothly. Jamal Kimani, greets and responds to all of our callers and visitors, understanding their needs and getting them to the right support. The multi-talented, Rachel Cox, wears several hats serving the front desk as well as the finance and development departments. Vanetta Brown rounds out the team with her knowledge and experience with human resources.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO FOR MACEDONIA FACE!

PARENT LEADERS ENCOURAGE LITERACY IN CHILDREN

The Hill District Early Literacy Initiative (HDELI) includes the assignment of community Parent Ambassadors who lead the engagement efforts to promote literacy for children. These parents know the importance of reading helping to bring awareness and resources to families for developing of reading skills and habits. In partnership with the Learning Disability Association, our Parent Ambassadors were trained to become Reading Tutors. Look for our announcement next month as our ambassadors begin offering tutoring for students free of charge!

Pictured here is Parent Ambassador, Allani Mosley with her children. Our other Parent Ambassadors are Terri Cokley, Geneva Day, and Tamara Prince.

HDELI is funded through the generous support of the McAuley Ministries Foundation.

IT’S NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER – HIGHMARK WALK FOR A HEALTHY COMMUNITY

PROMOTING HEALTH AND WELLNESS

As part of Macedonia FACE ongoing efforts to promote healthy living and to combat health disparities impacting African Americans, FACE invited 2 speakers to bring information and resources to our Hill District neighbors.

Abdullah Salem brought freshly prepared food and shared his plans for opening a grocery store to serve the Hill District community, Salem’s Market. The grocery store will hire local residents and will provide fresh and prepared foods. Without a local grocery store, fresh foods have not been easily accessible to many residents.

Reggie Howze talked to residents about the health value of walking.

Mr. Howze, a Hill District resident, gave personal testimony about how walking has changed his life and his health. Mr. Howze is a champion walker and will compete in the national Senior Games in Pittsburgh

this July.

Project Prom

The Allegheny County Department of Human Services (DHS) operates Project Prom, a multi-day pop-up boutique that helps make participation in prom by area teens a little easier by providing free prom attire. Clothing, accessories and shoes are provided through the generosity of individuals and area retailers.

Every parent wants their child to be able to enjoy their school prom, but often the costs present a financial hardship for the family. That is why programs like Project Prom are so important to support our local teens. Macedonia FACE CEO, Tinisha Hunt, and staff member, Vanetta Brown, volunteered at the boutique this year.
