Recently, FACE was called to respond to the loss of housing for residents of the Roosevelt Tower apartments following a devastating fire. The apartment building housed many older adults. Imagine having to leave your apartment suddenly with only the belongings on your back and placed in a hotel room with little information about next steps. FACE Family Coordinators and Case Managers led by Supervisor Rachel Webb, along with other community organizations, provided empathy, financial assistance and support to facilitate several of the residents to be sheltered temporarily in hotel rooms after the shocking news that the building would not be re-opening and they needed to find a new place to live.  FACE worked with former tenants to find new homes, to develop a plan to move and to get reestablished in their new residence. We are grateful to know that the residents are in safe, stable housing.

Macedonia FACE Lifeline program responds daily to families who are at risk of eviction or utility shut off or experiencing food shortage. Families experience hardship from a variety of circumstances and FACE staff have the experience to help families determine if they are eligible for and connect them to resources that can help. In some situations, FACE provides direct financial resources to address rent and utility payment arrears and food shortage.

Here are some items that are frequently requested and that we would like to have on hand to give families when they are in a housing transition:

Air Mattresses

Mops

Cleaning Supplies

Brooms

Toothbrushes

Toothpaste

Deodorant

Soap Shampoo

If you are able to donate any of these items, please deliver them to our Baum Blvd offices.

Rachel Webb is Macedonia FACE’s Family and Community Teaming (FACT) Supervisor. Rachel has been at FACE for 5 years. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and is in the process of completing her Masters in Counseling Psychology at Chatham University. Rachel came to FACE with experience working with families as a Case Worker for Children, Youth and Families in Erie, PA. She has a particular passion for working with moms and feels that they most often need someone to listen to and advocate for them, and she appreciates that they are often frustrated and tired from not being listened to before getting to FACE. Rachel is able to bring energy and a strengths-based approach because of Macedonia FACE’s culture of equity and compassion. Rachel notes that her team is awesome. They have a unique blend of skills, and they care about supporting one another – they work well independently, and they know when to get support. The Family and Community Teaming (FACT) program is funded by the Allegheny County Department of Human Services to support families who may be experiencing stress. Tinisha Hunt, FACE CEO describes Rachel as a ”go-getter” Rachel has grown significantly at Macedonia FACE, taking on challenges and being open to feedback to elevate her leadership skills- I have seen her excel. She is a supportive supervisor and teacher for her staff. Rachel is an integral part of our team and we are blessed to have her.”

Macedonia FACE will be participating in the Highmark Walk again this year with a booth and give-a-ways! We are NOW registering walkers and teams who will walk in support of Macedonia FACE.

Did you know that an average of 14 Pennsylvanians die every day from drug overdose? According to the Center for Disease Control, the overdose death rate is 7 times higher for Black males than White males and 2 times higher for Black women than White women. To address this disparity, increased access to prevention and treatment must be made available as well as increased education and awareness regarding fentanyl and the availability of harm reduction tools such as Naloxone, a medication available without a prescription designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdose.

As part of Macedonia FACE’s efforts to increase our ability to recognize and support individuals who are struggling with substance use, FACE has engaged experts in the field to provide our staff with education and skill building. This month, Gabby Warner, Harm Reduction Services Coordinator for Prevention Point Pittsburgh (pppgh.org) presented a program describing harm reduction tools and the services available through Prevention Point.

Substance abuse is a disorder that can happen to anyone, any age, race, gender, or economic status. Hear the testimony of the sister of an individual who died of a drug overdose:
