They had inflatable tents for kids to bounce around in. It was a family affair!
And very charming.
I went on stage, looked over the crowd...
Mostly parents in their thirties with kids between newborn and ten. Which meant the average age was about 25—until I showed up and doubled it!
When I started singing those Rat Pack tunes, something kinda wonderful happened...
The kids knew these songs. Those young'uns were sitting on bales of hay and singing along.
Sing Along with Slim!
Then they started requesting songs.
Do you know "Beyond the Sea"?
Can you sing "Fly Me to the Moon"?
My favorite request? A young girl--about 5 years old--marched up to the stage and introduced herself.
"Hi. I'm Presley."
And then Presley looked up at me and said, "Do you know Mack Tonight?"
Mack Tonight.
I smiled. I knew what she meant. “Yes, Presley,” I said. “I know Mack Tonight.”
Her mom shrugged her shoulders and said it was Presley's favorite song.
Normally, when people request Mack the Knife I tell them the story behind the song...
It's from the Three Penny Opera, 1928. Wasn't a hit until Bobby Darin did a version in 1959, which won a Grammy. Won another Grammy the following year for Ella Fitzgerald.
And the reason he's called Mack the Knife is because Mack went around stabbing people!
But I didn't want to tell Presley that story. She might have nightmares!
So I just sang the song.
Presley started dancing. Not the kind of choreographed routine you see on Dancing with the Stars. No TikTok-perfect dance moves.
No.
Presley was doing a happy Snoopy dance. Pure, joyful. Free form. Impromptu. Jubilant!
Watching Presley dance so exuberantly was a joy to witness. And I thought, this… this right here… might be one of the Top Ten Slim Moments of the Year!
And that's what it's all about, right Slim Folks? Precious moments.
After the show, a teenage boy came over and handed me a glass of watermelon juice. He worked at the bacon-wrapped hot dog stand (yes, that's a thing!) which was not far from the stage.
He said, “I caught your whole set. You were great. Thought you might need a drink.”
Let me tell you something—that watermelon juice was one of the best drinks I’ve had in a while.
So there you have it, Slim People.
Presley and watermelon juice.
Two wonderful reasons to play the Pumpkin Patch Festival.
And maybe, just maybe, proof that the world could use a festive beverage and a few more happy dances in the pumpkin patch.
It's all about love.
Who loves ya? Uncle Slimmy
