WELL, SHIVER ME TIMBERS
WITH JULY & AUGUST CAME
A POURING IN OF MIGHTY FINE REVIEWS FOR
HONORING THE ENEMY
|
JUMP INTO THIS NAUTICAL FICTION COVERING THE LATE 19TH CENTURY ~ from the Galveston Daily News (oldest newspaper in Texas-1842) written by a well-known naval historian, Mark Lardas. To see it in full:
Here's an excerpt: "In the 1940s, C. S. Forester wrote a book with stories about a Royal Navy midshipman, Horatio Hornblower, previously the subject of a novel trilogy Forester wrote in the 1930s. Adding this fourth book detailing Hornblower's earlier career created a new literary genre: a series of books following the life of a naval officer. Forester has been widely emulated since then. Honoring the Enemy: A Captain Peter Wake Novel, by Robert N. Macomber, follows this tradition. It's the 14th book in a novel cycle following the career of a United States Navy officer. Most nautical novel cycles are set in the age of fighting sail, from 1750 through 1820. Macomber's Peter Wake has a career spanning the last half of the 19th century. The first novel had Wake starting his career as a new naval officer in the Union Navy in the American Civil War. By Honoring the Enemy, the 14th book in the series, Wake is a senior captain in the United States Navy. The book is set in the Spanish-American War. ... Whole good stand-alone adventure, Macomber prefaces the story with a timeline of Wake's adventures to 1898. If you like nautical fiction, Honoring the Enemy will be a delightful treat."

THE FICTION SHELF ~
from the July 2019 issue of "Library Bookwatch," an online book review magazine, by James A. Cox, Editor-in-Chief / Midwest Book Review / 278 Orchard Dr., Oregon, WI 53575. To see it in full:
Here's an excerpt: "Critique: Pure entertainment from cover to cover, Robert N. Macomber's Honoring the Enemy is the fourteenth book in the award-winning Honor Series of historical naval novels from the Naval Institute Press. The newest Captain Peter Wake novel, Honoring the Enemy will prove to be an immediate and enduringly popular addition to community library collections. It should be noted for personal reading lists that Honoring the Enemy is also available in a digital book format."

EDITORS' CHOICE ~ from the Historical Novel Society's Historical Novel Review magazine, Issue 89 (August 2019), by Thomas J. Howley. To see it in full:
Here's an excerpt: "... Fourteenth in a series, this magnificent historical novel is just fine as a stand-alone. The military, operational intelligence, and technical acumen of the well-known author are exceedingly formidable. The accompanying sketch maps are illustrative and necessary, something too often missing in many books. The Spanish are portrayed as honorable adversaries fighting a losing battle. Small, surprising and arcane historical details abound. Macomber's work is filled with military pathos and sentiment all soldiers and sailors will instantly understand. A masterpiece, and one of the best I've reviewed!"

MORAL ELEMENT SHINES BRIGHTLY IN A HEART POUNDING TALE ~ from the in Florida Weekly, by Phil Jason, PhD, U.S. Naval Academy Professor Emeritus of English, and media literary critic. To see it in full:
" ... The author's handling of all aspects of his craft is truly impressive. Characterization (especially through dialogue), scene-setting, descriptions of action, descriptions of cannons and other technological factors, and representations of the severest types of deprivation are all sewn together in a stunning panoramic canvas.
There is even room for a scene in a brothel and a sketch of the deep love and desperate longing between Capt. Wake and his wife Maria. Historically accurate where it needs to be, constantly inventive and vivid, and appealing in its insistence that there are such creatures as good men holding onto virtue in the worst of circumstances, Honoring The Enemy is first-class adventure with a heart, a soul, and a brain."

TRAVELING IN PETER'S WAKE
Puerto Rico
|
Here's a location from my next book, Word of Honor, which is on the beautiful south coast of Puerto Rico, in the quaint town of Guánica. Peter Wake, the U.S. Navy, and Army landed there in 1898. The memorial rock in the photo is where army engineers built a dock to offload supplies. Visit:

CLOSING THOUGHTS
|
My Honoring The Enemy book tour has been tremendous, with 41 events from Miami to New York City! What great fun we've had with longtime Wakians, enthusiastic booksellers, iconic venue hosts, new readers & everyone in between, but the year isn't over! I'm looking forward to the USS Turner Joy event at Bremerton (Seattle) in September, appearing at the Southern Festival of Books (Nashville, TN) in October, lecturing in the Caribbean in November, and taking a private group to Cuba in December. Many have asked when the next book is coming out. Well, I just got word from my editor that Word of Honor (Honor Series #15) will be released in October of 2020. So batten down the hatches, my friends, because 2020 promises to be just as exciting!
Onward and Upward, for us all ...
