We are thrilled to announce the official launch of the Madison Metropolitan School District’s “Mad for Reading” literacy campaign, designed to foster a lifelong love of reading among students of all ages. This initiative encourages family involvement in students' reading journeys, creating shared experiences that extend beyond the classroom.

In celebration of this campaign, we’re excited to share resources to help your family get involved. This month, we’ve curated a special Black History Month book list to highlight stories that celebrate Black history and culture. Additionally, be sure to check out our Bingo Cards for fun reading challenges and engage with inspiring stories from our schools to see how the campaign is taking root in classrooms.

We’re also excited to invite you to the upcoming Read Your Heart Out event, a time-honored tradition now in its 21st year, where African American and Black community members share stories and poems with our students. Tune in on Monday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. via the MMSD YouTube page to participate in this inspiring event.

Thank you for joining the Mad for Reading movement! Together, we can make a lasting impact on our community, helping every child thrive through the power of reading.

Mad for Reading: Celebrating Black History Through Books

In celebration of Black History Month, MMSD presents a curated book list for PreK-12 students, emphasizing literacy as a gateway to learning through our Mad for Reading program. Showcasing the rich history, cultures and contributions of Black Americans, these books—from picture stories to in-depth novels—foster community, curiosity and understanding. We encourage families to explore these stories and celebrate Black voices year-round while nurturing a love for reading and learning.
