REFLECTION

This morning I read John 1, and it sounded like this:

In the beginning there was Love, and Love was with God, and Love was God.

Through Love all things were made; without Love nothing was made that has been made.

We were made in love by love for love. And this morning, I see the abundance of love in my world: I've awoken to another day, the sun rose, the birds are singing. Abundance. I shouldn't, but sometimes I take these things for granted; because they happen so often I can forget to see them for the miracles that they are.

We can be blind to the familiar. We can also be blind to the unexpected or the surprises in our lives. I think of the woman at the well. In her surprise encounter with Jesus, she was probably expecting him to treat her as everyone else in the town probably did, with judgment and condemnation. She might have put up her protective barriers and rejected his outreach. He was gentle, and out of his own goodness offered love in the form of acceptance and kindness. What a gift he gave and she received, and then she rushed to her town to pass this along. Had she rejected this unexpected gift, the whole town would have missed out.

I see in this a reminder to give love but also to receive love; otherwise, we put a stop to the flow. Who might I encounter today? Family, friends, a child rushing to catch the bus, a clerk at the store. Each one is created by God and a gift from God. What might God be offering each of us through each other?

How might my life be different if I saw each part of my day as a gift, recognized the abundance, welcomed and accepted it as such, let it wash over me and lived in the flow of love?

Open my eyes, Lord

Open my ears, Lord

Open my heart, Lord

Help me to see the world through the lens of love

Help me to live in the flow of your love

Prayer of Contemplatives in Action

To contemplate is not to escape from life.

It is to enter deeply into it.

It is to stand before God

stripped of pretense,

and discover that before anything is demanded of us,

we are loved.

Not because we are good,

not because we succeed,

not because we understand,

but because God is God.

And once we know ourselves loved,

we can dare greatly,

suffer greatly,

and give greatly.

Ignatian Pathways

The Office of Ignatian Spirituality’s podcast feed offers audio reflections that incorporate Ignatian themes into daily spirituality, as well as resources for spiritual directors. Their latest series, Ignatian Pathways, gathers voices from across the Ignatian family to share about the many pathways to God that we have all discovered through Ignatian spirituality.

Episode 5 is “Our House is the World,” an episode with an actual Ignatian family. John and Clara are a married couple deeply engaged in the Ignatian family as key staff in Jesuit Refugee Service USA and American Jesuits International respectively. They both share about the Ignatian and Jesuit mission to be with others and to be at home in the world, and to face our world with hope as we pursue faith and justice. As they echo, our house is the world, and Ignatian Spirituality helps us stay grounded and at home in the world by keeping us attentive to our feelings, aware of our history, and focused on seeing Jesus. Listen now!

Via the Ignatian Way

Via is the latest program from the Office of Ignatian Spirituality (OIS) – a rich, 10-month introduction to Jesuit tradition and Ignatian Spirituality open to adults of all ages.

Currently Via is looking for volunteer facilitators to help guide participants on their Ignatian journey.

Volunteer facilitators will deliver thoughtfully designed curriculum with the full support of Via Program Coordinator Marselys Lucero, giving you everything you need to lead with confidence. If you have a strong relationship with Ignatian spirituality and are looking to accompany others in their Ignatian journey, this is a meaningful opportunity to gift your time and talents — in whatever format works best for you.

An in-person cohort is planned for Portland starting this fall. If interested in participating, please email us at IgnatianME@gmail.com. For general questions about the program, visit the Via page (IgnatianVia.org) or email Marselys Lucero at mlucero@jesuits.org
