Making connections with other organizations is an important part of the City of Welland’s efforts in providing programming to residents.

And that’s exactly what is taking place at Welland Community Centre, formerly known as the wellness complex, and its new neighbour on the east side of the recreational canal – Grand Canal retirement residence, a home that opened late last year.

Work started in the spring on a new walkway to join the 130-unit facility with the community centre, part of a reciprocal agreement between both parties.

Target development represents new beginning for Welland's Seaway Mall
Mike Belcastro is excited by all the activity in the north end of Welland.

With proposed developments on the Northern Reach and Quaker Road/Niagara Street area bringing in somewhere between 4,180 and 4,880 residential units, the president of Seaway Mall has a right to be excited.

It’s a lot of potential new customers for the mall at 800 Niagara St.

City council recently approved funding for a Phase 2 environmental assessment study for residential and commercial use at 968 and 1000 Niagara St. Under the city’s community improvement programs, the developer is eligible for $13,551 in funding out of a request for $27,103 to cover the assessment costs. The city’s portion of the funding is $8,551 with Niagara Region kicking in $5,000.

With lots of construction along Webber Road in the western end of Welland, it can be hard to know what is coming to the neighbourhood.

At the southeastern corner of South Pelham Road and Webber Road, something big is going in.

Welland Canadian Tire to become company flagship store with major expansion

Comparing the scope of what Welland’s Canadian Tire store will soon look like to an airliner hangar would be misleading.

Simply put, the hangar would probably be a runt compared to the store.

That’s because as part of a massive investment it’s making into its brand, Canadian Tire’s expansion in the Rose City is about to make the store a flagship for the high-profile retail giant celebrating 100 years in business this year.

Welland is a great place to operate a business. City Council and the Mayor are always available and interacting in the community. This makes them approachable and open to discussing business issues whenever needed. This community is very family oriented and appreciative of our sponsorships and participation in local events. Reuter & Reilly Insurance
Reuter & Reilly Insurance has remained a family business proudly serving Welland and the Niagara Region for nearly 100 years. The brokerage was started in the 1920s by the Reilly family, and Dick Reilly, son of the original founder, was still involved with the business when it was purchased by current owner Jeff Reuter in 1995. Operating out of a converted home on Niagara Street, Jeff’s father oversaw a different insurance brokerage until the late 1980s, and his background and mentorship continue to be highly valued by Jeff and his team. Although the COVID pandemic dampened celebrations for the 25th anniversary, Reuter & Reilly Insurance are proud of this milestone and looking forward to a bright future of serving their clients, and our community.
Doing business in Welland means not just going to work every day to provide a service, but also being an active member in the community and giving back to the city and its residents in any way we can.”

Bosh Rexroth

The Welland location of Bosch Rexroth Canada was identified as a key partner in the company’s global expansion strategy and work is underway to optimize the Welland facility. This investment in innovation, automation, productivity, and environ-mental enhancements began in 2019. The significant changes coming to the Welland site include an expansion of the logistic centre, modernization of the manufacturing areas, equipment and processes, upgrades to the climate controls, and a renovation of the main administration areas. The logistics centre expansion is an exciting endeavour that will see the construction of a shipping staging area with four new loading docks and a transportation corridor that links the centre to the manufacturing area for a completely enclosed path for materials. The project is expected to be complete in late 2022 and staff are eagerly looking forward to the improved processes, teamwork, and efficiencies this enhancement will usher in.
