But what happens when the cast is torn apart at the seams by jealousy and ambition? One dancer may pay far too high a price for the attention of center stage. Kentucky Artisan Center Exhibits and Demonstrations
9am-6pm Daily
200 Artisan Way
Get Ready, Get Set: Multiples in Clay
(Through February 24th, 2018)
The Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea has a new exhibit featuring 29 Kentucky ceramic artists. The exhibit, "Get Ready, Get Set: Multiples in Clay" showcases the creativity expressed when creating in a series. Both functional and sculptural works are included and the exhibit introduces 10 new ceramic artists to the Center.
Clay has no form of its own, but it can be shaped in minimalist, whimsical, representational or abstract ways. The idea of multiple works in clay is a natural one, whether using the potter's wheel, hand building, or using sculptural techniques. This progressive process fuels new ideas.
The exhibit features matching sets, as well as works that relate to each other based on form, construction and detail. Functional works include dinnerware sets in a variety of designs by Amelia Stamps, Amy Elswick, Jonathan Dazo, Suzy Hatcher and Paul Muth. Many styles and ideas can be seen in the colorful cups, jugs, vases, human and animal forms and realistic replicas that are central to this exhibit.
Numerous works have colorful surfaces, some with intricate designs such as the slip cast "High Heel Shoes" by David Bogus and Melisa Zimmerman's "Sunflower Bottles." More subtle surfaces can be found on Bill Whitt's wood-fired jugs, and on Wayne Ferguson's "Frog Ocarina Quartet."
The versatility of clay is most obvious in the show's sculptural works, such as Page Candler's abstract "Birds," Wyman Rice's organic sculptural forms, Bob Brigl's whimsical face jugs, Lynn Duke's "Pretty Women" sculptures, and the minimalist sculptures by Amy Chase.
"Agates: Kentucky's Jewels"
(Through December 31st)
This exhibit tells about the history, formation and location of these fascinating and rare works of nature.
The exhibit explains how these unusual agates, found primarily in five central Kentucky counties are formed. Numerous lapidary and jewelry techniques for turning this rare stone into elegant jewelry are also shown via photos and text.
Displays of original Agate specimens as well as finished jewelry by numerous Kentucky artists, round out this exciting exhibit.
Saturday Tours and Demonstrations
December 2nd - Lindy Evans, of Berea, will sculpt Santa's from polymer clay in her demonstration from 10:30am-3:30pm in the Kentucky Artisan Center.
Evans creates one-of-a-kind and limited edition Santa's and dolls developed from studies of real people. She sculpts the faces from polymer clay, paints the features, and uses vintage fabrics to sew the clothing she designs.
December 2nd - On Saturday, Dec. 2, musician Gary Bertram, of Georgetown, will perform holiday favorites on the guitar from 11am-2pm in the Kentucky Artisan Center.
An accomplished painter and musician, it has been Bertram's goal to produce a CD of Instrumental Guitar Hymns in the spirit of praise and worship. The guitar styles in both volumes contain contemporary, jazz, chord melody, and some bluegrass. Overall, these songs were designed to be soothing, peaceful, uplifting, and encouraging of faith.
December 2nd -
Jim Shields, of Lexington, will sign copies of his children's book "Starbird's Special Gift" from 11am-2pm in the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
This is a story about a young boy who cares for a bird that he finds struggling in the snow. The story offers readers and listeners numerous life lessons, with illustrations that bring the story to life for readers of all ages.
December 9th -Kathy Conroy, of Pleasureville, will demonstrate her intricate scratch board techniques from 10:30am-3:30pm in the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea.
Conroy creates realistic images from her drawings and photographs on scratch board
. Scratch board
is a form of direct engraving where the artist starts with a Masonite panel coated with white clay. This clay layer is covered with a thin layer of black India ink leaving the artist a solid black panel as a starting point. Lines are then cut or scratched through the ink to the clay surface and color is added with a brush onto the exposed clay areas.
December 9th - Geographer, photographer, and writer David Zurick, of Berea, will sign copies of his new book, "Morning Coffee at the Goldfish Pond" from 11am-2pm in the Kentucky Artisan Center.
David Zurick, winner of the 2006 National Outdoor Book Award, recounts an event in his life that seems exceedingly uncomplicated: he builds a goldfish pond in his backyard. Yet, there is more to a goldfish pond than meets the eye. Zurick's compelling story travels the world, encompassing places of extraordinary beauty and rich cultural traditions, but the core of it is in Wolf Gap Holler, Kentucky, where
he lives among hard-working and community-minded neighbors, cuts firewood to keep warm in the winter, and enjoys morning coffee by his goldfish pond.
December 9th - The trio "Na Skylark" will perform holiday and Celtic music from 11am-2pm. This trio is made up of Celtic harpist Lorinda Jones, Irish Uilleann Piper Cathy Wilde, and fiddler and vocalist Jannell Canerday.
The group will be performing songs from their new CD "Old Ceol" along with holiday favorites.
December 16th - Three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will demonstrate a variety of woodcarving styles and techniques on Saturday, Dec. 16, from 10:30am-3:30pm in the Kentucky Artisan Center.
December 16th - Lexington musician, Jan Hill will play a selection of holiday music on her harp from 1am-2pm in the Kentucky Artisan Center.
Born in Nebraska and raised in Oklahoma, Hill dreamed of playing the harp after hearing it played when she was a child. Hill purchased a harp, taught herself to play and then took harp classes in Singapore and the U.S.
Hill will be playing a selection of holiday favorites from her CD "Christmas Harp Carols from the Hills" available at the center.
December 23rd- Artists Donna & Donnie Smith will demonstrate their painted gourds and ornaments from 10:30am-3:30pm in the Kentucky Artisan Center.
When Donnie and Donna Smith planted gourds by their back porch, their journey as craftspeople began. First, a design is drawn on the gourd with pencil and then the design is burnt into the gourd surface with a wood burning tool. They then paint the designs with watercolors, inks, dyes and water-based stains, and seal each gourd with a clear acrylic.
December 25th- CLOSED FOR CHRISTMAS DAY
December 30th - Artist Carl Von Fischer, of Mount Vernon, will demonstrate his oil painting techniques from 10:30am-3:30pm in the Kentucky Artisan Center.
Von Fischer attended the Central Art Academy, studying commercial art, and graduated with top honors. He then worked for advertising agencies in Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Denver, and Greenville, S.C., before moving out west to Missoula, MT. where in the open spaces of the west, he began to teach himself to paint. In 2003, Von Fischer moved to Kentucky to be near his son and grandchildren and he now is painting full-time.
