Madeline Island House Tour Returns, Saturday, July 22
Contact the Madeline Island Chamber Office at 715-747-2801

The popular Madeline Island House Tour returns this summer on Saturday, July 22 with six houses showcasing the work of local craftsmen.

Island House, Virginia and Henry Llop's place on Middle Road and South Shore Road, was just extensively renovated by Troy Nelson. Lake Effect Builders added a second floor to Judy and Pat Sebranek's cottage on Capser Road and Gene Nelson built a garage and studio. Elmer Nelson built the house on North Shore Road that Susi Saxl and Robert Kramer have enjoyed since 1994. (It features a delightful wall of taxidermy.)

The three other houses also offer unusual designs. Betsy and Jim Newton's daughter, architect Laura Nash Campbell, designed "Pink Bear", the cottage they built in 2002 off South Shore Road.  Ned and Carol Hancock chose a TimberPeg post-and-beam structure when they built their New England-style house on Islewood in 1999. And the Pries guest house built by Arvid Kron in 1974 is an "upside-down house"-with bedrooms on the first floor and living space on the second floor to capture the panoramic view of the Michigan shore.

The bi-annual tour, which runs from noon to 4 p.m., benefits the work of the Madeline Island Historic Preservation Association, which runs the Madeline Island Heritage Center and recently commissioned the stunning mural by Holly Turandot that can be seen from Rice Street.

Tickets, which are $25, will be available at the Chamber of Commerce office and local businesses prior to the event or can be purchased at any of the houses during the tour. A map will be available at the Chamber office.  If you have further questions, contact the Chamber office at 715-747-280

Saving Wild Salmon & Our Souls
June 20, Summer Solstice Celebration
Northland College, Ashland, Wisconsin

Our Great Lakes salmon came from the Columbia River Basin where a twenty-five-year fight to restore wild salmon is taking place. But the movement to restore and protect rivers so they can be free-flowing and healthy once again is taking place along rivers across the country-from the Kennebec River in Maine to the Elwha River in Washington. This talk addresses the challenges we face in protecting wildness.

Don't miss the summer solstice celebration with alumnus Rocky Barker '75 an environmental journalist for the Idaho Statesman and author of Scorched Earth: How the Fires of Yellowstone Changed America, Saving All the Parts: Reconciling Economics, and the Endangered Species Act. His columns have been syndicated in newspapers across the country and he's won the National Conservation Achievement Award from the National Wildlife Federation. He is now writing an in-depth investigative series on salmon restoration efforts in the Pacific NW.

In addition to the presentation, there will be summer music by Joel Glickman and a reading for solstice by Dr. Alan Brew.
