City of Madison May 2025

Crystal Beach is Open - Summer's Here

Crystal Beach Aquatic Park officially opened for the season on May 30, following a brief delay due to flood recovery efforts and cold weather. Despite a cold start to summer, the community showed up in full force to enjoy the opening weekend.

In addition to public swim hours (12-6 PM), Crystal Beach offers a variety of programs, including water fitness classes and swim lessons for all ages. These programs offer residents the opportunity to stay active, learn essential water safety skills, and enjoy a healthy and engaging summer.

In addition to the programs and recreational opportunities available, the City is proud to partner with organizations committed to expanding access. Through generous support from Bethany Legacy Foundation and Jane's Kids, the City is able to provide free swim passes to local families in need—ensuring more children have the chance to enjoy a safe, active, and memorable summer at the pool.

Flood Recovery and Seasonal Preparations

Throughout May, City crews continued their hard work on flood clean-up efforts, preparing Madison's public spaces for Memorial Day weekend and the start of the summer season.

Fresh sod was laid at Riverview Campground as a final touch, and we were proud to welcome back both familiar faces and new visitors over the holiday weekend.

The flower baskets have returned along Main Street, adding vibrant color to our downtown. The Bicentennial Park restrooms also reopened for the season following a small renovation and clean-up efforts, and Hargan Matthews Park will be reopening soon.

Thanks to the ongoing dedication of our city crews, we continue our commitment to keeping Madison clean, safe, and beautiful for all who live, work, and visit. We're looking forward to a bustling and beautiful summer!

Celebrating National Tourism Week

In May, we proudly recognized National Tourism Week, a time to celebrate the vital role tourism plays in supporting local economies, showcasing community assets, and welcoming visitors to experience all that makes Madison special.

To mark the occasion, we were excited to welcome guests from across Indiana for several meaningful events that highlighted our City's charm, growth, and ongoing progress.

We hosted the Indiana Association of Realtors 2025 Summer Summit, bringing realtors from around the state to experience Madison's vibrant downtown, scenic riverfront, and continued development firsthand. It was a great opportunity to showcase the momentum taking place throughout our community.

We also welcomed planners from across Indiana for the American Planning Association's Spring Professional Development Conference. With our blend of historic preservation and strategic revitalization, Madison continues to serve as an example of thoughtful and effective planning in action.

Adding to the week's events, we were honored to host Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith for a visit to Madison. His trip included a tour of Arvin Sango, one of our key industry partners, and lunch at Hinkle's.

Later in the month, we celebrated the grand reopening of the Comfort Station at 221 W. Main Street with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Now serving as a Satellite Visitor Center, this newly renovated space offers public restrooms, tourism information, and a locally curated gift shop in the heart of downtown.

We're proud that Madison continues to serve as a welcoming destination for events, professional gatherings, and tourism-focused investments that strengthen our local economy and celebrate the unique character of our community.

175 Years of Service

Mayor Bob Courtney had the honor of attending the open house for Western Fire Company #3, celebrating an incredible 175 years of dedicated volunteer service to the City of Madison.

Founded on May 23, 1850, Western Fire Company #3 is the third oldest volunteer fire company in Madison. From its humble beginnings—sharing equipment with other local companies—to becoming a proud pioneer in adopting the first white fire engine in Madison, this company has built a strong legacy rooted in courage, community, and service. Over the decades, they’ve not only protected life and property but also preserved history, including the care of “Old Smoky,” a Civil War cannon once fired during the city’s Fourth of July celebrations.

Mayor Courtney issued a proclamation recognizing this significant anniversary and thanked the members of Western Fire Company #3 for their ongoing commitment to safety, education, and service under the powerful motto: “We Conquer to Save.”

Please join us in congratulating and thanking Western Fire Company #3 for 175 years of outstanding service!

Recognizing Service and Community in May

In May, the City of Madison proudly celebrated several important recognition weeks and observances, honoring the people, places, and values that make our community strong.

We issued official proclamations for Mental Health Awareness Month and National Historic Preservation Month, recognizing their lasting impact on our City.

Mental Health Awareness Month reminds us that mental health is just as important as physical health. We're fortunate to have organizations like Centerstone, LifeSpring, The Freedom Center, Ruth Haven, and others providing essential care and support in Madison. Their work is a reminder that access to mental health resources and open dialogue can change—and save—lives.

National Historic Preservation Month, themed "Harnessing The Power of Place" in 2025, highlighted Madison's rich architectural heritage and the dedicated individuals working to preserve it. From our National Landmark Historic District to ongoing restoration efforts, Madison remains committed to protecting its historic identity for generations to come.

We also honored National Police Week, a time to remember law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty and to thank those who continue to serve with courage and dedication. Their commitment helps keep our community safe every day.

During Public Service Recognition Week, we acknowledged the hardworking individuals who serve in local government. From crews maintaining streets and parks to the first responders, program staff, event planners, and administrative teams, each person plays a vital role in keeping Madison running smoothly and welcoming to all.

We also celebrated National Small Business Week, recognizing the small businesses that power Madison's local economy. These businesses reflect the creativity, resilience, and heart of our community. We encourage everyone to support local shops and restaurants—this week and throughout the year.

To all those who contribute to the life, safety, and spirit of our City—thank you. Your work and dedication make Madison a better place to live, work, and visit.

Our youth baseball, softball, and t-ball leagues are in full swing, and it's been great to see Rucker Sports Complex full of energy, teamwork, and community spirit.

From the first pitch to the last inning, the fields have been filled with kids learning, growing, and having fun—and stands full of families cheering them on. It's one of our favorite sights of summer!
