I love Madrid for so many reasons. One of them is the food. Paloma, my best friend in Madrid is a talented, formally trained chef. In addition to enjoying her company because she is fun and funny, I also get the benefit of both her cooking and her restaurant selections.
Last Saturday we met up with her friends to walk around Salesas, a fun neighborhood with great boutiques, old bars and plazas full of Spaniards enjoying life. After some shopping and a stop at the oldest bar, we made our way to her chosen restaurant for lunch. Barrutia y La Nueve.
As always, I loved her choice!
It is quintessentially Spanish.
At 100+ years old, this family run restaurant exudes Spanish charm and reminds people of a Spanish grandma's house. The rooms are small and a bit disjointed. We ate in a room that required us to walk behind the bar to get to it.
They are famous for salmorejo, which is a bit like a blended gazpacho, with flakes of Manchego cheese and parsley oil. They also serve one of my favorite Spanish dishes, torreznos, a bit like chunks of crispy bacon served with a truffle puree (FYI Paloma makes these and they are even tastier from her kitchen). On the healthier side, they serve another of my favorites and most simple Spanish dishes - a tomato. Simply dressed in olive oil with sea salt flakes and shaved red onion.
Another suggestion - the tortilla de patata with white and black truffles. To be honest I don't always know what I'm eating before I taste it. But it's always delicious! I was a bit suspicious of a dish the day before when I met them out at a bar. Upon asking I learned it was pigs ears. I skipped that one.
See the menu in Spanish with an English translation here.
Their food is a good example of one of my favorite Spanish expressions - chuparse los dedos - finger licking good.
And another reason I loved it was that the chef came over and sat down with us to talk through the menu and help us decide what to order. We gave him some ideas, he would comment about it, suggest a smaller or larger portion and then help us select other dishes that would be good complements. Of course he came back to check on us throughout to hear what we thought.
How often do you have that experience? I eat out a lot and it's a rarity. And thoroughly enjoyable!
They've won awards for the best béchamel sauce in Madrid, they have delicious red and white Spanish wines and they are located in a great neighborhood - three more reasons to go.
On your next visit to Madrid, consider a similar walk through Salesas to do some shopping and then end at Burratia y El Nueve for lunch.
I had to leave before desert, but on my next visit to Madrid I will be back here and will be ordering the superpostre doble secreto de la casa (home made double secret super desert). Or if you make it there before me, let me know how it is!
