For decades Valley growers have been working to save water. Drip systems are efficient but don't leave enough water to seep back into the ground, where it could later be pumped up. The underground supply growers rely on in dry years has diminished, and the state has mandated it be restored. Putting water in a basin is one way to let it percolate back into the ground.

An international manufacturer of cooling and refrigeration products recently celebrated 40 years in southwest Madera with a catered barbecue, car show, plant tours and more. “Evapco Madera was the second manufacturing plant that Evapco founded,” said Bill Jones, senior vice president of global operations for Evapco. “We were established in 1976 in Baltimore, Maryland, and the operation out here in Madera was founded in 1979.  

North Fork woman looking to breathe new life into downtown area

Jennifer McMillan of North Fork has a big plan for their Downtown. She recently purchased a strip of buildings along road 222, the main passageway through town. It includes the K & B Auto Parts, two empty storefronts, and two houses. Her vision includes creating a country apparel store, a candy shop and eventually a diner.
