'We Are Magee' Celebrations

As a school team, we take moments each and every day to celebrate each other and our learners. We want to also take the time to celebrate our Magee families and community members. If you, your family, or learners have something they want to celebrate with the whole Magee school community, please send a picture and a description to [email protected] and we will add it to this section of the newsletter. We are excited to see and share other celebrations in our community in the weeks to come!

Weekly Message from Mr. Nies

Happy Friday Magee Families:

In previous years, Mrs. Amy Plum was our Mental Health Navigator for the Kettle Moraine School District. This year, we welcome Mr. Scott Bakkum into this role. He is an amazing resource and a wealth of knowledge. He meets with our Magee School Counselor and Magee School Psychologist once a week and is ready to offer support for any Magee family or student(s) in need. Here is his welcome message to our community.

Hi Magee Families!

My name is Scott Bakkum and I am the new Mental Health Navigator for the Kettle Moraine School District. I received my Bachelors Degree from UW-La Crosse and my Masters Degree in Counseling from UW-Oshkosh. After spending the last 24 years in the Oconomowoc Area School District as a school counselor, I retired this past June. I am now entering my 35th year overall in the field of education and I am very excited to join the Kettle Moraine team. I see this new role as an excellent opportunity to continue my mission of building positive relationships with families while helping students overcome challenges in their personal and academic lives. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my four precious grandchildren. I also enjoy traveling in the U.S. and abroad, attending Wisconsin summer festivals, golfing at local courses, and watching the Green Bay Packers! I am thrilled to begin this next phase of my career supporting students, staff and families in the Kettle Moraine School District.

If you would like to contact Mr. Bakkum, his contact information is as follows:

October's Habit of the Mind

Listening with Understanding and Empathy

As we work on learning more about our October Habits of the Mind focus, we have been learning about the three Ps - Pause, Paraphrase, and Probe. This week we talked about and practiced - pause and paraphrase. Next week we will talk about probe. Please see the description of each below.

PAUSE

  • WHY: Effective listeners need to learn how to “pause their brain” and set aside their own thoughts.
  • HOW: Wait time. Being silent to make sure the other person has finished their thought. It is often difficult to manage impulsivity and be silent. Many people use strategies such as counting to 20 or looking down at notes they are taking.

 PARAPHRASE

  • WHY: Letting others know that you are trying to understand them and that you value their ideas and thoughts.
  • HOW: Sentence stems such as: “You’re suggesting that……” “Your idea is……” “You’re upset because……”

PROBE:

  • WHY: Showing others that their ideas are worthy of exploration and consideration AND demonstrating your desire to understand more fully before trying to respond with suggestions or advice.
  • HOW: Sentence stems or clarifying questions such as: When someone uses terminology or words that are vague, the listener clarifies to make certain they understand. This shows their interest in what the other is saying. “Say more about your ideas on …. “What did you see in the text that led you to make that inference?” “ Explain what you mean by…”

I will share the parent and student resources next week for you to read through.
