Hello Magee Families:
This week, we had a taste of teaching and learning virtually AND in-person. It was great to see all of the learners' smiling faces on Google Meets, but I think we can all agree that seeing those smiling faces in person was way better. Again, I want to thank you for your flexibility and understanding during this time. I would love to hear from you - how was the brief transition for you? Please share your feedback with me.
I have recently taken a break from sharing resources about Student Agency with you. I will be getting back at that. One of the first learning opportunity choices on the professional learning choice board for our Magee staff is a podcast about implementing student goal-setting in the K-12 classroom. I wanted to share this podcast with you - so you can learn alongside us as well.

Episode 8: Student Goal Setting, with Chase Nordengren and Amanda Thornton (59-minutes)
- Description: For our final episode on student agency, we thought it was time to help our students set some better goals. So, we brought in Chase Nordengren, senior research scientist at NWEA and author of the forthcoming book, Step Into Student Goal Setting (Corwin, Jan 2022). He's joined by 3rd grade teacher and education innovator Amanda Thornton to discuss how goal setting, with clear learning intentions and plenty of scaffolded support by teachers, can lead to high learning growth and more student agency. As always, there are plenty of tips, actionable strategies, and stories from the classroom. Thank you for joining us this season!
If you choose to listen to this podcast and would like to talk more about it, I would love to have a discussion with you. Have a great weekend.
Take Care & Be Well:
Justin S. Nies and the Magee Elementary School Team
Please remember this quote from Henry Ford: “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.” Thank you for continuing to work together. We see the successes each and every day.

Announcements to Keep in Mind

As the cold air blows in and the snow starts to fall . . .
Please remember to send your child(ren) to school with their jacket, hat, gloves, snow pants, and boots. If students do not have their full gear, they can not play in the snow. We have a lot of great spaces to play and we want to make sure that all students get to utilize all of the outdoor spaces during their recess.
As we approach the Winter months . . .
. . . it is important to monitor health symptoms of your learners. Relative to COVID, if your learner has a household or non school exposure to a positive case, your elementary student must be quarantined. Should this be the case, notify their school of the need to quarantine and then connect with the health room to discuss return dates. Please monitor your child for symptoms of COVID, reporting to attendance if your child is being tested or too ILL to engage in the temporary distance learning.
Symptoms of COVID-19 include: cough*, shortness of breath/trouble breathing*, fatigue, new loss of sense of taste or smell*, fever/chills, headache, sore throat, nausea/vomiting, runny nose/congestion, diarrhea, muscle or body aches).
If your child develops one symptom marked * or two or more other symptoms of COVID-19 (even if fully vaccinated):
-
Immediately have your child begin to isolate. More specific information on the duration of isolation is provided in this overview of isolation.
- Keep all unvaccinated siblings home, and any symptomatic vaccinated siblings. Report to their health room.
- Contact their healthcare provider for evaluation.
- Seek PCR testing. Only negative PCR tests will be accepted for a student who is symptomatic. Please speak with your doctor about this or inquire at a testing site. If positive, further dates will be discussed with health staff. If PCR negative, return to school dates can be discussed with health staff.
-
Contact your student’s health room. All Health Room contacts can be found HERE.

Greetings 5th Grade Families,
Some important events are happening in the coming weeks:
The week of January 24th, middle school counselors will be visiting with 5th graders about the choices they have for their middle school learning. They will bring along KMMS students to help, including graduates from the elementary school visited.
Please join us for one of our two Middle School Information Nights in early February. Choose the date that works for you, as each night will feature the same information:
Monday, February 7th @ 5:30 p.m. OR Wednesday, February 9th @ 5:30 p.m.
The Information Night will include a presentation in our gym at 5:30 about learning environments and course options for our students. After the presentation, you will have time to connect with teachers in the 6th Grade or Create to ask them about their work with 6th graders. The night will conclude by 7 p.m.
In addition to these evening opportunities, there will be three optional days available for you to visit the middle school during the school day (with or without your child). These dates are Friday, February 10th, Tuesday, February 14th, or Wednesday, February 16th. These sessions will begin at 9:00 a.m. Please RSVP to attend one of those sessions during the Information Night, or email Middle School Office Assistant Lisa Peterson at [email protected] to register.
