A Message from Principal Nies
02/25/2022

Hello, Magee Families:

As you are aware, we are working on building student agency in our learners this school year. We recently had teachers, teacher leaders, and administration from Colorado, Michigan, Missouri, and Illinois, through TransformED, come and visit Magee to see this in action. While they were visiting, they stopped in our Kindergarten rooms to watch our kindergarteners reflect on their math goals and sign-up for their small group learning activities. This is an example of the work we are doing this year to make sure practices like this are happening all the way from K5 through 5th grade. It is amazing to see how even our youngest learners are setting academic goals and choosing where they need to continue their learning so they can reach those goals. Check out an example of their sequence of work below.

If you have any questions, I have a link you can access to set-up a time to meet with me. Please feel free to schedule a time here - Click Here to Schedule a Meeting with Me

Take Care and Be Well,

Mr. Justin S. Nies
Five-Year-Old Kindergarten Mathematics Workshop
At the beginning of each math lesson, the teachers use a mini-lesson to teach new or on-going concepts. After the mini-lesson, students are told which activities are available to them during the workshop time. They participate in a personalized computer program called Dreambox, they choose a variety of activities from the math basket, and then students work in small group with their teacher.
Students Choose Where They Start Their Small Group Learning
After students learn about the activities at each center, they choose where they will start their learning. This all based off of the goals they are working toward reaching. During this time, teachers are working in personalized, small group instruction to help students further understand the mathematical concepts and to get them closer to reaching their goals.
Reflecting on Math Goals in Five-Year-Old Kindergarten
Periodically, students work with their teacher in small group to talk about each goal and where they are at in reaching that goal. A green square means the student feels they have mastered that goal. A yellow square means they are almost there reaching their goal but need a little more practice. A red square means they need a lot more practice and instruction to reach that goal.

The teachers use this as an additional data point, amongst many data points, to help plan instruction, center-based learning activities, and personalization for each student in the class.

It is amazing to see all of this in action as well as to see the authentic, deep thinking students do to be honest with where they are at in reaching their goals.
Jump Rope for Heart Fundraising
Hello Magee Families,

Our “Kids Heart Challenge” event has concluded and all classes had a great time working on their various jump roping skills and increasing their heart rate with Drum Ball, while also raising donations for the American Heart Association. We as a school were able to raise a total of $7,971, which is outstanding. These donations will help many adults and children that have cardiovascular conditions.
Everyone should be proud of all of the hard work that you have done! A big thank you to all classroom teams that participated and great work Magee Elementary!! Your team thank you gifts will be handed out when we receive them from the American Heart Association.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Awesome Job Magee!!
