A Message from Principal Nies
9/10/2021
Happy Friday Magee Families:

This week I had the pleasure to go into each classroom and do team building with our students. (You can see what that was like in the most recent Capturing KM with Superintendent Plum. If you missed it: CLICK HERE). An action step in our school goal this year is to have monthly team building activities and connection making with me. In September, it includes us working as a team to build a web with yarn while working on the following habits of mind: managing impulsivity, listening with understanding and empathy, taking responsible risks, and persisting. As a reminder, we practice and teach Habits of Mind at the elementary level as they are developmental habits and behaviors aligning with our district's Graduate Profile. To learn more about Habits of Mind, CLICK HERE.

Last week, I shared with you the importance of community through the lens of author Elena Aguilar and how community builds our resilience. Over the holiday weekend for my doctoral coursework, I was reintroduced to Parker J. Palmer. His writing revolves around leadership, education, connection, and community. In an article he wrote titled, 13 ways of looking at community ( ... with a fourteenth thrown in for free)," community is not a goal to achieve, but a gift to be received". Here are other bullet points he makes about community:
  • We receive community by cultivating a capacity for connectedness.
  • Community must expand to embrace strangers, even enemies, as well as friends.
  • Community that can withstand hard times and conflict can help us become not just happy but 'at home'.
  • Leadership and the authority to lead toward community can emerge from anyone within the organization.

I share this, because I see this within our Magee community. We withstood a hard time during the pandemic (school closed, distance learning, etc.) and realized how much a school is like a second home for many of us. We embraced new families and a new Principal (strangers) while we celebrated our Back to School Bash, and we have leaders throughout our community helping us to realize the amazing gift we have here at Magee Elementary School. We truly are lucky to receive this gift - the Magee Community. Thank you for everything you all are doing to make this such a special place. I am excited to see how our community continues to support one another and grow. If you are interested in reading the full article, please let me know. I will be happy to share it with you.

Please check the key dates below, health room updates from Patricia Schuetz RN (Magee School Nurse) and Regina Cowell (Magee Health Room Aide), information about our "Back to School Picnic" on Friday, September 17th, picture day for anyone who missed it, the Magee PTO News and an updated map for car pick-up at dismissal time!
By the end of September, I will be seeking your feedback and sharing with you our 2021-2022 Magee School Goal as well as our Magee definitions around our teaching and learning philosophy. This will also include how we define student engagement, student agency, and student management (discipline).

Next week is our first full week of school. I know it is going to be a great week! Enjoy your weekend.

Magee PTO News

Please see the welcome from the Magee PTO. Remember, as a parent/guardian, you are all members! Also, the PTO asks that you complete the directory form if you have not done so yet. This form updates your contact information and it also let's the PTO know if you would be interested in volunteering for their community building and fundraising events.

The Magee PTO has started a Kindness Rock Project. They will be creating and hiding rocks for families to hunt for. Look for them on Facebook at Magee Kindness Rocks. When families find them, there is a bin outside of the school office for students to bring them in. The rocks will be used to line the paths in the Butterfly Garden. What a great way to spread kindness and beautify our butterfly garden! Happy Hunting!
