A Message from Principal Nies
9/24/2021
Happy Friday Magee Families:

As we continue to focus on community this month, Elena Aguilar writes "there's no way to avoid the fact that trust is a prerequisite for a healthy community" (p. 100). She goes on to write that "trust is an emotional state. It is the feeling of confidence we have in another's character and another's competence" (p. 101). She continues to write about trust through the lens of research done by Byrk and Schneider around relational trust. "Relational trust refers to the trust that's a result of the interpersonal social exchanges that take place in a group setting" (p.101). The following three key findings, from the research done by Byrk and Schneider, connect the role of community in building resilience. They are:
  1. Student learning is impacted by the amount of relational trust among adults. Where there is high relational trust among staff and between staff and parents, students thrive.
  2. For trust to exist, each group of adults who work in a school need to understand their own obligations, and they need clarity on what others do. Role clarity is important for trust to exist.
  3. Trust is influenced by the conclusion we draw about our colleagues' intentions. These conclusions can be drawn around respect, personal regard, competence in core responsibilities, and personal integrity. (Pp. 101-102).

As you read further in the chapter, Aguilar writes about ways we can build trust and it aligns with the Habits of the Mind we work on with our students day-to-day. They are: listening with understanding and empathy, thinking about your thinking, and persisting to follow through with what you said you were going to do. We are always working on building relational trust within a school setting, it is ultimately what we know helps students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

With that being said, we ask that you take a moment to review our school goal, our definitions, and our action steps. After reviewing them, please provide feedback by completing the short feedback form. It can be anonymous, but if you have questions or feedback, I would like to personally reach out to you to answer your questions and to learn more about your feedback. Leaving your name and email address is up to you, but I am a firm believer - if questions and feedback are left anonymous, how can we move forward together? Here are the documents I have mentioned.

Thank you for taking the time to review our goal, our definitions, our action steps, and providing feedback specifically related to our goal, definitions, and action steps. As I have mentioned in the past, "it takes a village"! Next week, I will be sharing more information with you around Citizen Magee and our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program within Magee.

Please check the key dates below, health room updates from Patricia Schuetz RN (Magee School Nurse) and Regina Cowell (Magee Health Room Aide), updates from our School Counselor Mrs. Doreen Heikkinen, Magee PTO News, and other updates.

Updates from Mrs. Heikkinen (School Counselor)
For those of you who do not know me, I am Doreen Heikkinen, School Counselor at Magee. Here at Magee all students participate in Guidance lessons covering a wide range of topics. For the month of September we are discussing issues like:
  • How to pay attention
  • How to ignore distractions
  • Exploring how we get good at something
  • How to make goals that are specific, challenging, and doable
  • How to make a specific plan to achieve those goals.

In addition to classroom guidance I am also available to meet with students individually and in small groups. Small groups can cover a variety of topics such as skills for success in the classroom, emotion management, problem solving and family change groups to name a few.

This next month I would like to focus on supporting students whose families have gone through a divorce or are currently experiencing a family change. If this is something you would like your child to participate in please let me know. Should you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 262-968-6454 Ext 8707.
Social Media Awareness - TikTok
The Latest TikTok Trend
We share this information with you, so you can have a discussion around responsible social media use with your child(ren). Please take the time to have a discussion with your child(ren) if they have access to social media. We want to make sure this does not occur within our schools at KM.

This recent TikTok trend has some students stealing random objects from school, ranging from ceiling tiles, to soap & paper dispensers, to more expensive equipment such as microscopes, laptops, and Smartboards.
  • TikTokers are posting videos claiming to have stolen school equipment
  • On the app, they refer to thefts as "licks" usually described as "devious" or "diabolical."
  • The district sent out information to all families about how the district would respond to this type of action from students. This information was sent on 9/17/2021.
You are invited . . .

Girl Scouts
All Magee girls are invited to join their grade's
Girl Scout Troop!

New kindergarten and first grade troops are forming now; interested girls in grades second through fifth will join existing troops.

Girl Scouts meet in a nurturing, inclusive environment to earn badges, develop friendships, and have fun!
They go on age-appropriate adventures, complete service projects, learn about nature and science, and explore the arts and their communities. Each troop meets once a month and often has additional optional activities throughout the year.

Please email Amanda at [email protected] for additional information.

Thank you!

Magee PTO News

Please see the welcome from the Magee PTO. Remember, as a parent/guardian, you are all members! Also, the PTO asks that you complete the directory form if you have not done so yet. This form updates your contact information and it also let's the PTO know if you would be interested in volunteering for their community building and fundraising events.

MAGEE KINDNESS ROCKS

The Magee PTO has started a Kindness Rock Project. They will be creating and hiding rocks for families to hunt for. Look for them on Facebook at Magee Kindness Rocks. When families find them, there is a bin outside of the school office for students to bring them in. The rocks will be used to line the paths in the Butterfly Garden. What a great way to spread kindness and beautify our butterfly garden! Happy Hunting!

Magee Fundraising Opportunity
Fall is approaching!
Get your Mums!!
This is happening right now! Here is what you need to know!
1) This fundraiser will begin on Wednesday, September 22nd.
2) The mums will be placed outside of the school.
3) The $10.00 fee per plant supports Magee Elementary School and Woodridge Landscapes. (This money has gone toward classroom supplies, classroom resources, staff celebrations, staff classroom needs, etc.)
4) If you want to purchase a mum or two or three, there is a box in the main entrance of the building on the drop-off table. Please place $10.00 for each mum you grab in the cash box. (i.e: 1 mum = $10.00, 2 mums = $20.00, 3 mums = $30.00, etc.)
5) The cash box will be in the main entrance starting at 7:30 AM and will be locked up, when our office and school closes, at 4 PM.
The fundraiser goes until we sell all of the mums OR the mum season ends.
Thank you for considering and purchasing these beautiful mums. We can not wait for the beautiful display outside of Magee and for you to have seasonal decorations for your property.
