One of our priorities in our community, at the District and at Magee is to create a strong culture of acceptance and understanding. You might hear your learner refer to “Habits of Mind” which are closely connected to our KMSD Graduate Profile; they are dispositions that help students problem solve, think critically and consider multiple perspectives. In February, we are taking a school wide approach focusing on the Habit of Mind, Thinking About Your Thinking and showing gratitude and kindness. Being able to examine our own thoughts while engaging in them is an important skill. As we think about the month ahead, we are hoping to redefine how we show gratitude and appreciation for one another throughout the month, rather than celebrating only on Valentine’s Day. February is also Black History Month. As we consider this Habit of Mind and how we show gratitude and kindness, we plan to learn more about the history of and contributions to our community from people of color.

In February, we will not be exchanging valentines as we had in the past, this is due to the health concerns that accompany the practice of exchanging items from home to share with others. We believe that our focus throughout the month described above will help our learners continue the long tradition of taking time to recognize and celebrate each other in a different way.

Students are not in school on Monday, January 18 which is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Observed every year on the third Monday in January, this is designated as a day of service in his honor. "In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community.(https://www.aascu.org/programs/ADP/MLKDay/) "

While our world does not currently support gathering in groups to contribute to acts of service due to social distancing, it does not mean it cannot happen. A good conversation might be to think about ways your and your family might be able to be of service in your community, neighborhood, or family. Together we can make a positive impact in our communities.

Parking Lot Safety
Safety at drop off and pick up are a priority for us. If you are parking and walking up to school, please use the crosswalk no matter which door your child uses to enter school. In addition, please remind children to stay with you when walking in to school. This is the safest way to get children into school. THANK YOU!

WISCONSIN WEATHER

This is especially important because classrooms are in separate areas of the playground each day. All but one area include the blacktop. In order to keep our cohorts in the different areas, students need to be ready to be out! When there is more snow, boots and snowpants will be necessary. Thank you for your support of the work we are doing at school to mitigate the spread of Covid!

Please help your children layer for the unpredictable
Wisconsin weather at this time of the year!

WHEN students leave home and the outdoor temperature is less than 50, they should be wearing something that covers their legs - leggings, pants, jeans, shorts/skirts with tights or leggings AND have AT LEAST two layers to wear outside. Hats and gloves are also important to send with your child.

Students are outside for a minimum of 30 minutes a day. In the event of a drill or emergency, students need to have enough clothing to be warm outside. It is easy to tie layers around their waist as opposed to being cold without enough to put on.

Thank you for your support!!
