Welcome to the June edition of the S.H.A.U.N. Foundation for Girls newsletter! As the summer seasons unfolds, I’m excited to share with you our latest updates as we continue our mission to empower girls and young women!
It’s really hard to believe that we are, already, at the midway point of the year! Time flies!
Chances are that you know of a student who recently graduated or is about to graduate because it is that time of year. I recently returned from my class reunion at Spelman College in Atlanta. I usually attend every 5 years and it was so great to spend time and reminisce with my Spelman Sisters and Morehouse Brothers!
June, of course, is also the month that we celebrate Father’s Day and the importance of fathers in our lives. This month, a special gift for Dad! Shop our #GIRLDAD t-shirt! They are available today!
My dad, Wylie, and I were very close - many years, we would spend our joint July birthdays (mine, 7/11 and his 7/30) on overseas vacations or birthday parties. Dad was always great (and generous) with the advice.
One of the best words of wisdom that he gave me would come during times when I was being challenged with some type of adversity. I would come to him, explain the situation, and he would pause…and then, say…"Baby, remember...A setback is a setup for a comeback!" That would always get me motivated to get right back out there and try my best!
When you have a role model in your life - a parent, a mentor, a friend, you feel like you can accomplish anything. Many of the organizations that we support with our grants, provide mentoring programs for young ladies that don’t have anyone in their lives to guide them. Studies show that mentorship improves graduation rates and inspires young people to go beyond the limitations that society puts on them.
When you support the S.H.A.U.N. Foundation for Girls, your donations help inspire girls to dream BIG! So, this month, we salute fathers, father figures and all who have mentored young people. We also have some phenomenal girls and women featured in our “Breaking Barriers” section, along with ways to support girls' mental health.
Happy reading and “Thank You” for being a vital part of the S.H.A.U.N. Foundation for Girls community. Together, we are creating a brighter, more equitable future for the next generation of women leaders.
