Detailed Project Overview
Project Overview: The full project scope covers Main Street & Boulder Drive, from the eastern intersection at Main/Boulder—east of the Water Street Bridge—to the western intersection, between Central and Academy Streets. Partial lane closures may result at times but given the current traffic patterns, disturbances will tend to be limited to partial closures only.
The project includes intersection reconfigurations at the east and west intersections of Boulder and Main, two (2) new traffic signals at Putnam/Main and Putnam/Boulder, streetlight upgrades, and sidewalk and crosswalk improvements.
Project Webpage: More details can be found on the City’s project page, which can be found at
www.FitchburgMA.gov/MainBoulderProject. We will include weekly look-aheads, so you can prepare for project impacts. It also includes both simplified and detailed designs of the project, as well as the comment portal and the ability to sign-up for newsletter alerts on the project.
Road Paving: With the exception of certain focused areas, the roads will not be paved through this project. There are extensive gas, water, and sewer separation projects planned in next 2-3 years. The goal will be to repave the roads when those projects are completed; otherwise, the City and Unitil would have had to tear up the newly-paved roads to complete those projects.
Parking: A small number of Main Street parking spots will be lost through this project, and on-street Boulder Drive parking will be removed altogether. To compensate for this loss, before project completion the City is working to create free (time-limited) on-street parking on Main Street, and free 2-hour parking at the Putnam Street (first floor) and Mill Street (both levels) garages. This work will be completed before any parking is removed for this project.
