5 Ways to Show Your Customers the Love

It's a great time to be an independent retail business owner. Your customers want to shop with you! You have a face, you can remember your customers' names and what they like to buy, you can make them feel special.

You have the one sure-fire, never-fail, super-profitable strategy for battling the big-box stores. You know your customers personally and you can put their wants, needs, and desires first.

Love Your Customers...

Loving your customers starts by looking at everything you do through their eyes. When you do this, all your business decisions suddenly revolve around what's best for them, not what's most convenient for you.

Here are 5 things you can do every day to show your customers the love:

  1. Set store hours to fit your customer's schedule, not yours.
  2. Choose a product assortment that reflects what your customer likes, not just what you like.
  3. Write your store policies (like your return policy) with your customer's best interest in mind.
  4. Make sure the entrance to your store is always clean and free of debris.
  5. Thoroughly train your staff so your customer gets the same great service from everyone in your store that they get from you.

And the money will follow.

When you love your customers, the money will follow. By putting their needs, wants, and desires first, you dramatically increase their "lifetime value" - the total amount they'll spend with you over their life as a customer.

When you love your customers and nurture your relationships, they will shop with you more often, spend more each time they shop, and send their family, friends, and colleagues to your store.
