Join Us in Advocating for Rural Maternity Care!

In October 2024 after an MAFP member notified us that Maine Health Waldo Hospital was planning to close its OB services, MAFP's Advocacy Committee wrote a letter urging the hospital to maintain those vital services in the community. Although the hospital continued with its plan to stop providing OB care, it motivated the MAFP board to investigate rural maternity care in our state. After speaking with the Northern New England Perinatal Quality Improvement Network (NNEPQIN) we learned that 9 hospitals have closed their OB service in the past 11 years (including Waldo). Inland Hospital disclosed they would also be closing their OB service in early 2025.

MAFP leaders subsequently met with stakeholders in the state, including:

  • Family physicians currently practicing OB care around the state;
  • The Maine Hospital Association, which has been looking at this for over a year to determine how to maintain these services in rural hospitals; and
  • Lead investigators of Maine’s Rural Maternity and Obstetrics Management Strategies (RMOMS) program, who have been studying rural maternity care since 2022 and created a needs assessment in January 2024.

In response, MAFP created a Rural Maternity Care Task Force to address these issues and work to maintain full maternity care in rural areas across the state and WE NEED YOUR HELP! Below is a link to a survey that will help us determine how many MAFP members currently provide OB care and how many would provide OB care if the opportunity was available in their practice setting. If you are interested in joining the task force, please provide your information in the survey. Here is the link to the survey.

Advocating for Harm Reduction programs in Sanford and Portland

Dr. Brendan Prast provided oral and written testimony to the Portland and Sanford city councils to oppose restrictive and non-evidence-based policies (1:1 syringe service programs) that would have dangerous impacts on the lives of Mainers. See a link for media coverage here: Portland Mayor's idea to reduce rates of needle exchange rejected.

Expanding Immunizations

Drs. Marya Goettsche-Spurling and Marco Cornelio testified in front of Maine’s Joint Committee of Health and Human Services in support of LR 93. This bill, sponsored by Representative Dr. Samuel Zager (former MAFP board member), would expand Maine’s current childhood immunization program to include adults up to 64 years old. This would allow our offices to obtain adult vaccines for free and provide them conveniently to our patients for free. See draft bill HERE.

Letter to Sen. King, Sen. Collins, Rep. Golden, and Rep. Pingree about the administration’s overreach into public health

Members of the MAFP Advocacy Committee and the Executive Board penned a letter to Maine’s Congressional Delegation expressing concerns about the restriction and removal of medical resources, such as the Medical Eligibility Criteria, and datasets such as the BRFSS, from the CDC website under the new administration. This letter highlights the value of these resources, and our fears that meddling from political entities will cause harm to Americans for years to come.

Milbank 2025 Primary Care Scorecard: The Cost of Neglect

Millbank’s annual primary care report was released in February 2025. Several alarming facts from the report include:

  • Only ~5% of healthcare spending was for primary care physicians
  • Reimbursement rates for primary care visits were ~25% of rates for gastroenterology office visits ($259 vs $1,092 per visit)
  • >30% of Americans lack a usual source of medical care

MILBANK SCORECARD

Primary care investment is an advocacy priority for MAFP. We helped create a bill for this year’s session of Maine’s Legislature that would create a primary care advisory council to study and recommend how to best invest in primary care in Maine.

A Day of Advocacy for Vaccines

Drs. Marco Cornelio and Marya Goettsche-Spurling represented MAFP at this event hosted by Maine Families for Vaccines. Several other organizations participated, including Maine Medical Association, Maine Osteopathic Association, Maine Public Health Association, and Maine Primary Care Association.

GET INVOLVED IN ADVOCACY!

Below are some ways to get more involved in advocacy at the state and/or federal level:

  • Join MAFP’s Advocacy Committee. We meet monthly during Maine’s legislative session. Email info@maineafp.org to join.

  • Join the MMA/MOA’s weekly legislative calls. Their advocacy committee is co-chaired by our own Pat Connolly. You can sign up for their calls here.

  • Join HAME (Healthcare Advocates of Maine) https://www.standupme.org/. MAFP's Dr. Brendan Prast runs this organization. They have been quite active in both state and federal advocacy efforts including meetings with Susan Collins and media appearances on Maine Public Radio and press conferences across media outlets.

Advocacy Happy Hour

April 3, 2025 | 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us for the Advocacy Happy Hour during the MAFP Family Medicine Annual Update! This informal gathering is a great opportunity to connect with colleagues, discuss key advocacy issues affecting family medicine, and learn how you can get involved. Enjoy refreshments and conversation while engaging in meaningful discussions about the future of healthcare in Maine. AAFP's President-Elect, Dr. Sarah Nosal and Dr. Sam Zager, a Representative from the Maine State House, will be there to share their insights and experiences, making this a valuable opportunity to network and gain a deeper understanding of the advocacy landscape.
