Maine Art on a Snowy Day

The storm warning has been issued and we're expecting a few inches of snow today.  A nice change from brown grass and muddy trails.

Also, a perfect day to think about Maine art.

Whether you're here or there, it's always nice to grab that cup of coffee or tea, curl up in the chair, and peruse some Maine art.  Two of these you will find nowhere else...

Maine World War II Cartoon Sketchbook.
1940s.
Spiral Bound. First Edition. Small spiral bound "Artcraft Sketchbook" with brown cardboard covers. Has a new mylar dust jacket and housed in a custom clamshell box built by bookseller's in-house bindery.

Note taped to verso of front cover signed Florence Phinney but no record of that name associated with a cartoonist. An exquisite collection of fifteen original pencil drawings with some colored pencil work from the World War II era depicting life on the home front. This unknown artist was very likely a professional as each drawing is exceptional and very humorous.

Wyeth, Andrew; Testorf, Helga (Subject); Brown, J. Carter (Foreword); Andrews, Leonard E. B.; Wilmerding, John.
Andrew Wyeth: The Helga Pictures (Inscribed by Helga).
New York, NY: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1987.
Hard Cover. First Edition. 208 pp. 4to. Minor scuffing to dust jacket from shelf wear, now in mylar cover. Red Cloth boards with gold embossed titling to cover board and spine. Clean and crisp within with small stain at head of text block near the foredge.

When the series of over 240 paintings and drawings of Helga Testorf by the American master, Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) came to the light the art world sprang back in surprise. It was also believed that Wyeth's closest confidant, his wife, Betsy James Wyeth, was unaware of the artist-model relationship and the work he produced between 1971 and 1985. In later years Helga also worked as a caregiver for Andrew as he aged and traveled with the family from their home in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, to midcoast Maine where the family has summered for generations. It was in Camden, Maine, that Helga Testorf inscribed this copy to the owner of ABCD Books and her store manager on July 9, 1999.
