In the April edition of the MMTA e-newsletter, we announced that Maine BMV would be expanding the CDL skills test elements in order to comply with FMCSA requirements. BMV has shared the additional requirements to the current testing protocols to give advanced notice to the trucking industry in order to prepare for the changes.

The additional changes that will have the greatest impact on members will be the amount of time that each road test will take. The increased time is due to the additional elements that were not previously performed, and the travel distance required in order to fit in each element, especially in more rural testing locations.

Impaired driving is a growing problem on our roads. The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety and AAA Northern New England are committed to raising awareness and fostering a dialogue that will promote safe driving habits.

In an effort to further improve professionalism in the trucking industry, the MMTA is working with NATMI to offer CSS & CDS Fleet Safety Certification courses for transportation safety professionals. The courses are applicable toward NATMI’s nationally recognized, university accredited certification programs.

The federal government’s representative before the U.S. Supreme Court is recommending that the high court deny review of the California Trucking Association’s legal challenge of a California law aimed at reclassifying owner-operators as carrier employees.

The California Trucking Association in a legal brief described as “head-scratchingly wrong” the U.S. solicitor general’s recommendation that the U.S. Supreme Court decline to hear an appeal of a state law aimed at reclassifying owner-operators as motor carrier employees.

Peak travel season is upon us and gasoline prices continue to soar. Americans are rightfully concerned as the cost of filling up their tank keeps going up at the pump. And while most may not pay as much thought to the price of diesel, the reality is that number weighs even heavier on their pocketbooks.

In a sweeping censure, a Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court judge granted a request from eight municipalities and issued an injunction preventing state transportation officials from proceeding with plans to impose bridge tolls.

International Roadcheck is behind us, but drivers have Operation Safe Driver Week to look forward to in July. Operation Safe Driver Week is scheduled for July 10-16. It is a program of the Commercial Motor Safety Alliance.

Law enforcement officers in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. will be taking part. They will be on the lookout for commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in risky driving. Identified unsafe drivers will be pulled over and issued a citation or warning.

Commercial motor vehicle inspectors will be conducting this year’s Brake Safety Week from Aug. 21-27, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance announced June 7.

Brake Safety Week is an annual commercial motor vehicle brake safety inspection, enforcement and education initiative conducted by law enforcement jurisdictions in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
