There are currently only 313,000 truck parking spaces in the Unites States. That isn’t anywhere near enough for the almost 3.5 million truck drivers who haul America’s goods from ports and warehouses to stores for consumers.

According to data from the Truckload Carriers Association, there is just one truck parking space for every 11 drivers.

The U.S. Department of Labor has published a new proposal on how workers should be classified, saying that thousands of people have been incorrectly labeled as contractors rather than employees, potentially curtailing access to benefits and protections they rightfully deserve.

Misclassifying workers as independent contractors denies those workers protections under federal labor standards, promotes wage theft, allows certain employers to gain an unfair advantage over businesses and hurts the economy, the department said Oct. 11.

The U.S. Department of Labor has proposed a rule that would set multi-factor standards for what constitutes an independent contractor, a departure from previous federal guidelines adopted under the Trump administration that were generally regarded as favorable to the trucking industry’s use of independent owner-operators, experts said.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration quietly let lapse a national hours-of-service exemption in place for over two years, a move supported by both major trucking companies and truck safety advocates.

The exemption, first issued by FMCSA in March 2020 following the national emergency declared by President Trump in response to COVID-19, was extended and/or modified over 10 times. It gave truck drivers and carriers more flexibility to deliver shipments of livestock, medical supplies, vaccines, groceries and diesel fuel by waiving hours of service restrictions.

WASHINGTON — The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is planning to unveil its final proposal regarding commercial motor vehicle speed limiters next year.

The agency wrote in the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) September rulemaking report that June 2023 is the target date.

UCR stands for Unified Carrier Registration program. It is a federally-mandated system for registering operators of commercial vehicles who are involved in interstate and international travel. This annual registration must be renewed by December 31st each year.

In an effort to further improve professionalism in the trucking industry, the MMTA is working with NATMI to offer a Motor Fleet Accident Investigation course for transportation safety professionals. The course will go over how to control costs through a complete and thorough vehicle accident investigation and help participants to develop skills in loss prevention, data collection and analysis.
