Spooky Adventures in Augusta

Museum educators bravely set up a table at the Viles Arboretum this October for the Trail of Treats event. About 400 people came, many wearing their Halloween costumes (such as the dinosaur pictured above). The Maine State Museum brought a delightful selection of bones and skulls for a haunting learning experience.

Museum Conference Travels to Lewiston

Two of our staff members attended this year's Maine Archives & Museums (MAM) Annual Conference at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn Campus. Kate Webber (left) organized the conference and Zachariah Selley (right) is the incoming MAM board president.

The conference focused on community support, marking the one-year anniversary of the Lewiston shootings and the role that museums and archives play in honoring current events.

MaineFest Became RainFest, but Was a Success!

The Maine State Museum’s annual MaineFest family event on October 5th brought over one hundred attendees to Augusta’s Capitol Park. The drizzly day didn’t scare off the most dedicated fun-loving families.

This free event was co-hosted by the Children’s Discovery Museum, which recently opened its new location in Waterville. Eleven organizations partnered with the two museums and set up tables with a range of hands-on activities celebrating all things Maine.

Attendees made art with Waterville Creates, tackled a scavenger hunt with the Friends of the Cobbossee Watershed, and played basketball with young Margaret Chase Smith at the Margaret Chase Smith Library table.

We look forward to next year’s MaineFest!

A New Friend Joins the Team

The Friends of the Maine State Museum is pleased to welcome Betty LaBua as the new office manager. Betty brings several years of experience in administrative support for nonprofits to the role, most recently as a Homeless Initiatives Support Specialist for MaineHousing.

We are looking forward to putting her enthusiasm for the museum and her mean minute-taking skills to work. Betty lives in Hallowell with her husband and she enjoys walks in the woods, bike rides, historical novels, and jigsaw puzzles.
