Teacher Workshop Facilitates Resource Sharing in Ellsworth

Last month museum educators traveled to the scenic Woodlawn Museum in Ellsworth to help lead a day-long teacher workshop. Participants received an in-depth introduction to the primary source materials on the Maine Shared History website.

Educators Take Local History to a National Stage

This year, chief educator Joanna Torow joined the Maine Department of Education (DOE) in Washington D.C. for a three-day conference on teaching with primary sources. The museum is working with the DOE on the Rural Experience in America project directed by the National Council for History Education and funded by the Library of Congress.

National Council for History Education conference attendees explore Thomas Jefferson's library.

For the past five years, Maine State Museum educators have worked to develop primary source-based teacher materials. The new website Maine Shared History is offered as a free resource to all Maine schools and homeschools. It was developed in partnership with the Maine State Library and Maine State Archives.

The resources offered on Maine Shared History are constantly expanding to offer more topics and historical content. Stay tuned for future updates!

If you would like to bring the museum into your classroom, consider booking a live virtual program or workshop

The small conference allowed the 50 participants to share information about their projects and learn from guest scholars.

Exploring the Gulf of Maine at the Maine State Aquarium

Maine State Museum staff visited the Maine State Aquarium last month to learn from others who are doing similar work. The trip will inform new museum exhibits related to the Gulf of Maine.

Like the Maine State Museum, the Maine State Aquarium was closed for several years following COVID and the discovery of major repair needs for its building at McKown Point in West Boothbay. Aquarium staff and others in the Department of Marine Resources adopted the same strategy as the museum by using their valuable “down time” to revamp, reorganize, renew, repair, and revise exhibits and programs.

Museum staff found that they and the aquarium have even more in common, from computers to whales! Both organizations are working with some of the same experts in digital interactives and whale skeleton articulation and exhibition. Seeing the aquarium gave museum staff valuable insights into their own exhibit elements and equipment, which are now in the planning stages.

The aquarium is currently closed for the season, but will open again in March 2025. Thank you, Maine State Aquarium staff for an informative behind-the-scenes visit in your wonderful new facility!

Museum staff listen to a talk by lead aquarist, Anna Breeden.

Exhibits preparator Ryan Walker and chief educator Joanna Torow examine special microscopes at the aquarium that have been specially designed and built for grade school student use.
