BodyInsight Medical Career Preparation Program
For the third consecutive summer, the Foundation has fully funded the BodyInsight program, allowing students hands-on learning experiences related to the medical field at no cost. Over two days, 20 students from throughout the district participated in the program which included receiving American Heart Association certification in caregiver CPR for adults, children, and infants. They also dissected sheep's hearts and learned how to suture. Medical students/future healthcare professionals were on hand to provide guidance. Student feedback was very positive. According to one individual, the highlight was, "Being able to become CPR certified; I just think it’s really useful to have that in your arsenal especially if you’re looking for an entry job in the medical field.”
Lyceum Service Trip
For many years the Foundation has provided support to the district’s Gifted Lyceum program's student service trip. This year was no exception, as the group traveled to Detroit and worked with a number of local organizations. Some of their activities included:
  • Two days working in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood helping elderly neighbors maintain their property by painting, clearing weeds, and making minor repairs.
  • Spending time at the Second Mile Center, a community center for youth in an impoverished Detroit neighborhood, meeting local children, helping to sort and organize donations, cleaning the facility, and landscaping the property.
  • Working with Detroit Blight Busters to help clean up a number of properties in the area.
In addition to working, they shopped and cooked for one another and reflected each night on their experiences. It was a wonderful experience that helped students to better understand how they are connected to the larger community.
One student reflected on their experience by sharing, “The lyceum service trip was a special experience that allowed us to help communities in Detroit in various ways. Through the work we did, we left a lasting impact, connected more with each other, and most importantly discovered the meaning of service without expectation. The service and reflections taught us many life lessons and demonstrated the importance of coming together to dedicatedly work towards a goal. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip and will remember the experience, and I truly appreciate the generous grant that made it all possible.”
Seed Money Granted for Demon Fund
The Foundation worked with Maine East’s athletic director, Kendall Griffin, to provide financial assistance to students who would otherwise have been unable to participate in summer athletic camps. These camps are essential for some students as they offer a safe summer activity while also providing health and socialization benefits. While initially developed for summer camps, the goal is to continue to grow the Demon Fund to help students pay for all sorts of fees they are not able to afford on their own such as Prom tickets, Homecoming tickets, etc.
