In association with the Maine Games, Colby College, and the Maine Amateur Sports Alliance

PRESENTS

Greetings!

You are cordially invited to the inaugural

M a i n e  V o l l e y b a l l  S u m m i t

on Saturday, November 23, 2013, at Colby College, in Waterville. If you are a fan, a player, a coach, official, league organizer, athletic director, booster, or someone who is interested in seeing volleyball explode across the Pine Tree State, we want you to be a part of this unique event.

Why now?

Volleyball is poised to take off in popularity over the next few years in Maine. Several new high school programs are scheduled to join the already growing list of teams from Washington Academy to Kennebunk.

How does the Maine volleyball community prepare for the amazing opportunities coming our way?

The Maine Volleyball Summit will bring together people from all walks of life, all levels of enthusiasm, all levels of ability as players, coaches, and officials, as well as those who serve as administrators, athletic directors, boosters, and fundraisers for our favorite sport.

Members of the Maine State Volleyball Association (MSVBA), Maine Volleyball Coaches Association (MVCA), the Maine Association of Volleyball Officials (MAVO), The Maine Recreation and Parks Association (MRPA), Maine Juniors Volleyball Club, recreation department leagues, tournament operators, venue owners, vendors, sponsors and more, will be on hand at the Maine Volleyball Summit.

By bringing everyone involved in our sport today together the organizers of the Maine Volleyball Summit are confident that a road map can be developed to make advances in Maine volleyball with everyone "pulling on the same end of the rope." We'll be combining resources, developing networking opportunities, creating new events and programs, and more.

At the end of the first Maine Volleyball Summit, there should be a strong sense of commitment, camaraderie, and contribution to unifying the entire volleyball community in the Pine Tree State. This is just the first step in making our sport more "Mainestream," but it is the most important step we can take.

About the Maine Volleyball Summit
Around the country and certainly within our own state we have seen over the past two decades the excitement and enthusiasm generated by comparatively new sports introduced at youth, high school, collegiate, and adult levels which have gained ground and considerable steam over a relatively short period of time. Sports like soccer and lacrosse have made huge inroads in the mid-1990s across the Pine Tree State. How does this happen?

Organization, promotion, cooperation, building databases for coaches, venues, and tournaments, as well as a good old fashioned passion for the sport that transcends self interest.

The Maine Volleyball Project is poised to help pull together all of those entities with even a small interest in seeing the sport develop, grow, and flourish in our state. Combining the resources and databases, and mailing lists, and social media efforts under a single umbrella (these groups and clubs and teams and individuals, etc. will still run their own show), can create a synergy that is ready for the expected explosion in volleyball in Maine.

Coordinating the creation of recreation department leagues for youth, middle school, high school age kids, can result in an economy of scale for purchases such as equipment, net systems, volleyballs, uniforms, etc., and can lead to bigger and better things for our sport. The future of volleyball in Maine, as with any other lifetime sport is going to be built on youth athletes and their families. Developing opportunities for kids AND adults in places where volleyball never previously existed isn't all that difficult. "If you build it, they will come!"

That phrase has been seen in communities across the southern and northern areas of volleyball for a while now, but still some communities and schools lacked the equipment, gym time, proper instruction, and/or desire to create opportunities. In Saco last year, Thornton Academy had over 50 young women sign up for the first Golden Trojan volleyball club team. This year, more than 90 student-athletes arrived on the first day of practice. Up until that time, nobody really knew how much the students AND the community wanted volleyball.

Later this fall a half-dozen or more middle school volleyball teams in Southern Maine, from Brunswick to York County will be playing in their first tournament.

How can the existing Maine volleyball community get ahead of this wave that will soon be crashing on our shores? The Maine Volleyball Summit is the first step. Bringing together those with a passion, expertise, enthusiasm, and skill as players, coaches, officials, administrators, directors, etc., can and will help us develop over a short period of time, a comprehensive plan. Your involvement as a "volleyball person" is important, and essential in the development, growth, and explosion of our sport in our state.

Long and short-term goals of the Maine Volleyball Summit and the
Maine Volleyball Project are to:
  • Develop a comprehensive system of training youth coaches (USA Volleyball has some outstanding resources they will share with us).
  • Develop a coordinated effort to help clubs, departments, schools, and leagues save money on equipment, volleyballs, uniforms, insurance, etc., through the creation of a group buying program.
  • Develop an online database of every volleyball-friendly facility in the state including indoors and outdoors.
  • Develop a directory of qualified/certified coaches who will step forward and lead high schools and middle school programs.
  • Develop a variety of volleyball opportunities for boys interested in the sport at the youth/recreation/club/school levels.
  • Develop a database for student-athletes to interact with colleges and universities in Maine.
  • Develop a plan for training new officials who can referee at the school and recreation level.
  • Create an Internet-based Maine Volleyball Hall of Fame.
  • And plan for an annual Maine Volleyball Summit to coincide with the end of the high school and college volleyball seasons, at which a banquet could be held to recognize outstanding programs, athletes, coaches, officials, administrators, etc. and promote the sport with a high-visibility marketing effort.
  • Develop a funding plan for the Maine Volleyball Project to help promote the sport throughout the state, and to provide financial assistance to developing programs, and potentially to offer scholarships for volleyball players to camps, clubs, and even institutions of higher learning.
We need you and your creative and professional skills to help develop, organize, grow, and promote the sport of volleyball around the entire state. Will you help? REGISTER FOR THE INAUGURAL MAINE VOLLEYBALL SUMMIT TODAY and let us know we can count on you and your passion for volleyball.
