Dear Friends of Maitri,
I am pleased to share our fiscal year 2013 Annual Report reflecting three important trends:
-
Financial support for Maitri from the federal government continues to decline, with revenue from this source dropping by more than $100,000 versus the prior year. Fortunately, increased donations from the community (generous individuals and private/corporate/community foundations) and significant additional reductions made in our administrative overhead have resulted in an improved, positive
net return.
-
While Maitri continues to provide critical end-of-life support for San Francisco's most vulnerable residents with advanced AIDS, our shift to medical stabilization care continues. In fiscal 2013, 19% of our residents experienced the end of their life at Maitri, while a majority - 51% - achieved their medical stabilization goals to the point that they were able to return to the community for a second chance at life. We celebrate this shift, while always giving priority in admissions for those in need of hospice care.
-
The age of our resident population continues to climb. In fiscal 2013, 55% of our residents were 51 years of age or older. In fact, 23% of our residents were aged 61 or older. Clearly, the increasing effectiveness of HIV medications - allowing persons with AIDS to live independently much longer than previously - is to credit for this significant shift.
One thing that hasn't changed at Maitri is the love, compassion and dignity that we offer each of our
residents - whether here for end-of-life care or for medical stabilization. We couldn't do any of this without the support of our dedicated donors, volunteers, and staff. Thank you so much for making all of this possible.
Warm regards,
|

Resident Spotlight: Oren
|

|
Oren's Deep South roots show through the moment you meet him. He is genteel and handsome, with a charming smile and kind voice. Yet early on, Oren knew Georgia was not the place for him. He didn't feel he belonged. Oren knew in his heart that there was more to life and so he headed west to find it. A seven-month motorcycle trip led him to San Francisco; a place so very different from the rural town he grew up in. "San Francisco is so open, so accepting. A metropolitan city with so much to offer," says Oren.
Before coming to Maitri, Oren had been sick for months, couch surfing until he became seriously ill and was hospitalized for pneumonia. He was feeling alone and weary, and he was worried about what was to come. "When people find out they are HIV positive, they often experience a period of feeling worthless, depressed, and isolated. It can feel like nobody cares," says Oren. He describes his first visit to Maitri as almost dreamlike: "I was waiting to wake up, because it just seemed too good. It didn't seem real." And while initially he was nervous about living in a group setting, he soon felt at home. "Staff and volunteers work together to meet all the needs of the residents. They do everything they can to make us feel comfortable and happy. The residents never have to hold back. This is our home."
Maitri strives to restore the dignity of its residents, and also their sense of joy. "Christmas at Maitri feels like it did when you were a kid. Every holiday is made big here," says Oren. "Staff and volunteers want to just sit and talk; they're interested, they make you feel special, cared about. They give you space but are always here when you need someone or want to talk." Oren is also a source of support for fellow residents. His humor and compassion, combined with his love of reading, serves Maitri well: In the past couple of months he's been writing carefully chosen words on Maitri's community bulletin board. Sometimes the posts are quotes, some are original pieces inspired by a situation or interaction Oren has observed. "They're a little like fortune cookies or horoscopes," reflects Oren. "My posts mean different things to different people."
When asked about the origin of his compassion and patience, he explains that in some sense his actions are self-serving: " I give what I want to get from others. If the people around me are happy, I'll be happy too. The golden rule is what I have in mind." In some ways, Oren's approach to life embodies Maitri's mission and purpose. We show loving kindness to others not because it is the right thing to do, but because in response to our compassion, we are loved in return. |
