MHS Parent Newsletter

April 2017                                          Volume  124  Issue  7

 Botts' Babbles
Spring Break was just what the doctor ordered for students and staff at Maize High School!  The third term flew by and the fluctuating weather played havoc with our immune systems and mental freshness.  The break came at a great time so we can recharge our batteries for a busy last term of school. As you will see in this newsletter, there are many successes to celebrate and many upcoming events taking place at MHS.  As always, please let me know if there is anything I can do to help make our school better!

There are many upcoming events at Maize High School:
  • State Testing will take place on April 4th and 5th for both Maize High School and Maize South High School.  To help accommodate the testing schedule, there will be two late start dates on April 4 and April 5, 2017 (see attached schedule):
    •     Notes for 10th and 11th graders:
      • All sophomores and juniors will be tested on the 2016-17 state assessments.
        •   Sophomores will take the English Language Arts and Math assessments.
        •  Juniors will complete the Science assessment on the first day. Juniors will NOT need to report for testing on 4/5 UNLESS they were absent on Tuesday and need to make up an exam OR if they did not complete both Science sections on Day One.
        •   All students participating in the state assessments will need to bring a pair of headphones if available. The school will have a limited amount for students to use.
        • All 10th and 11th grade students will need to bring assignments or reading material to each test session. There may be time available to complete these activities once students have finished their individual test sessions.
      • Notes for 9th and 12th graders:
        • Transportation will run regular routes on each of these days.
        • Students that are not involved in state assessment tests will report to the MHS gymnasium or auditorium at 7:40am. They will be supervised by teaching staff, and students are encouraged to bring assignments or reading materials.
        • If 9th and 12th grade students and/or parents are providing their own transportation on these late start days, students do NOT need to report to school until the start of the first class period (Tuesday = 9:45 and Wednesday = 9:34). ALL students will be expected to be on time to that class period; tardies will be given if students arrive late. These students should enter through the main doors near the front office.
  • ACT Aspire testing will take place on April 19th for all 9th and 10th graders.  On this day, juniors and seniors will not be required to attend school.  For juniors and seniors, there are two scheduled college visits to both Newman University and Friends University.  If students are interested in visiting these schools, they can sign up in the Counseling Office.
  • We are pleased to announce that Maize High School hosted a job fair for students on Thursday, March 30th from 3-5:00 p.m. in the MHS Commons.  Businesses who were present included; Lowe's, Academy Sports, On the Border, QuikTrip, Edible Arrangements, Hog Wild, Jose Peppers, and more!
  • Prom will be held on Saturday, April 22nd from 8-11:00 p.m. at Exploration Place.  Outside date request forms are available in the front office at MHS.  Prom is for Maize High School juniors/seniors, and their guests can range from freshmen in high school through the age of 20.
  • After Prom will be held directly "after prom" from 11:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m. at Maize High School.
  • Reality U will take place at MHS on April 20th and 21st.  Reality U is an exercise that helps youth understand some of the "realities" involved in preparing for an employable future and adulthood. The goals of Reality U are to show teens that their performances in school today will affect their futures, as well as to give teens a chance to learn and practice personal finance skills in a fun way.  In order to make this event happen, we need lots of volunteers!  In order to volunteer, please follow these steps:
    •     Go to the Reality U website at www.realityu.org,
    •     Click on the "volunteer" tab,
    •     Select school name (Maize High School),
    •     Select sessions you would like to volunteer,
    •     Enter your full name and email address, and then click submit.
  • Congratulations to Maize High School science teacher Jessica Fisher, who was named the 2017 Celebrating Excellence in Education Award Winner for MHS.
  • February Carlos O'Kelly Students of the Month:
    • Congratulations to Hailey Gilmore!  English Teacher Mr. Frye had this to say about Hailey: Changing schools presents a difficult enough challenge to students, but when that change occurs in the middle of a semester near the end of a high school career and includes moving states, a student can find the situation debilitating. However, Hailey Gilmore has not just proven herself resilient amidst these odds; she has begun to thrive. Happy to be at Maize High School every day for the academic growth it has already provided her, Hailey has not settled for the minimum that Maize can offer her. Behind in coursework from the day of her arrival in my rigorous English 11 Pre-AP class, Hailey not only persevered by doing double the work at the beginning of the class but she also distinguished herself with the level of her effort and depth of her thought. In addition to Hailey's self-motivation, she also maintains the sweetest temperament of virtually anyone at Maize High School; she wouldn't harm a soul, and she willingly accepts and works with anyone. Moreover, beneath her quiet disposition, Hailey possesses a strength that no exterior can display. She has not wilted under any stress or strain that change and challenge have imposed on her. I see her grow every day, and I smile upon the tremendous future of this young woman. Maize High has found an incredible addition in Hailey Gilmore.
    •  Because of the number of nominations, we have an additional student of the month!  Congratulations to Khea Ward!  Math teacher Jenny Meirowsky had this to say about Khea: Although I do not have Khea in class, I am sure that Khea has exceptional grades. She is a hard worker and has high expectations of herself. She uses before school and EnCor to get extra help if needed. One of best things I love so much about Khea is she is always smiling. She is so positive and is a friend to everyone she meets. Khea is respectful and polite and always willing to go the extra mile for anyone. On the softball field, Khea has made tremendous strides over the last few years in becoming a respected member of our team. Khea meets every criteria for Student of the Month. She is one of Maize's finest!!!  In addition, ESOL teacher Rey Ramirez had this to say: Khea is an outstanding student and overall person. She is a selfless 4.0 student who exemplifies what all teenagers should be. She cooperates well with others and is the first to help a fellow student in a time of need. Her positive attitude is contagious and motivating for her peers and staff alike. I highly recommend you select this wonderful kid, thanks!
  • March Carlos O'Kelly Students of the Month
    • Congratulations to Jacey Handy:  Numerous staff members commented about Jacey: Jacey is not only a good student with a 4.25 GPA in challenging courses, she is also involved in over 10 clubs at MHS while also being a student athlete. She has held leadership roles in many of the clubs and worked hard to increase student participation and school spirit. She was a driving force behind implementing the new COTY system in Student Council as well as organizing and promoting most of the Red Rage events at ballgames. She's had a challenging year with numerous injuries, but maintained a good attitude.
  • Multiple other students received nominations from their teachers for both February and March.  Congratulations also goes to Marco Ibarra, Sydney Wolgast, Jordan Claeys, Savannah Hughes, Andrew Clark, Gwyneth Conner, Kendra Cunningham, Eric Honas,  Matthew Melchor, Christian Perez, Pei Qi Lin, Tanner Singleterry, Ryan Kuhl, Collin Lee, Lyndsey Piska, Zach Tiemeyer, Aria Sheldon, Brody Lumpkins, Meredith Fisher, Keagan Johnston, Hayley Tice, Braeland Booth, Abby McCoy, Austin Brummer, Rosslyn Phommachanh, Ashley Massie, Samantha Chesser, Riley Stegmaier, Alexis Cannizzo, Sydney Jackson, Jaeyd Schoonover, Southatta Chanvannasee, Alaina Cunningham, MaKayla Toth, and Brooklynn Torline.
With Eagle pride,

Chris Botts

Driver's Education

2017 SUMMER FACE-TO-FACE DRIVER EDUCATION

Mandatory Parent/Student Meetings and Enrollment Documentation

USD 266 Maize Schools will once again offer summer face-to-face driver education.  Any student who turns 14 on or before June 1, 2017 and has or will graduate 8th grade by June 1st will be eligible to enroll in summer driver education. Students will attend two weeks of classes starting Thursday, June 1st and ending on Tuesday, June 13th from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Students will also complete at least five, one-hour driving sessions (schedule to be determined after class begins). We prefer that students get an instructional permit at the DMV in advance of the class and spend as much time as possible driving in safe locations with their parents. Practicing with parents before class starts is a plus considering that driver education is only five hours of driving.

Two mandatory enrollment meetings will be held in May. Parents and students must attend one of the two meetings. The first meeting will be on Monday, May 1st at 6:00 pm in the Maize High School Lecture Hall. The second meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 3rd at 6:00 pm in the Maize South High School Commons Area. Eye tests will be given at both of these meetings. Enrollment forms will be emailed out to parents during the month of April.  Students will need to bring any type of license or permit they might already have. The cost of summer driver education is $200 with payment due in full on the date of the meetings. No registrations or late payments will be accepted after the last parent meeting on Wednesday, May 3rd.

Students and parents with questions are encouraged to contact Steve Martling at 316-462-8000 or by email at smartling@usd266.com or Curtis Klein at 316-462-8048 or by email at cklein@usd266.com.

Maize ProStart teams had another successful year at the Kansas ProStart invitational! The management team, consisting of Kieran Wohlford and Evan Tschosik, placed 2nd with their concept, Burgerwood. They created their entire concept, from the menu to costing to marketing, and presented it to judges from the industry. The culinary team, consisting of Jordan Altenburg, Lauren Barratti, Kyree Givens, Justus Kirkwood, and Hannah Tice, placed 3rd in the state. They created a three-course meal in just sixty minutes with no running water and only two butane burners. Their meal included scallops with three sauces, a teres major steak with parsnip-cauliflower puree and ratatouille vegetables, and an espresso panna cotta with a chai churro. They were judged by people from the industry, including health inspectors, restaurant owners, and chefs. Both teams put in a lot of hard work and made Maize proud! Thanks also to Culinary Arts teacher, Cara Poole, for her expertise and guidance!

MHS After Prom
Dear Parents,

Planning is under way for the Maize High After Prom party which will take place April 22, 2017.  For the past 29 years, we have held the After Prom party, which is a drug- and alcohol- free activity created to reduce the chance of students becoming involved in substance abuse related accidents.  Students are able to play games, eat food, and win prizes while being supervised throughout the night. After Prom, a non-profit event, is completely supported by donations from dedicated parents, individuals, organizations, and local businesses.

There are lots of ways you can lend your support:

  • Cash donations:  Money goes to rent rides and games, as well as to purchase prizes, food, etc. $5, $10, or $20 can make a big difference!  Monetary donations can be mailed to Maize High After Prom, 11600 W. 45th St. N., Maize, KS 67101.  All donations are tax deductible.
  • Prize donations:  We can use anything that would make a great prize.  Do you own a business or work for one that can help?  Past prize donations have been: gift cards, t-shirts and hoodies, TV's, laptops, cameras, headphones, flash drives, camping equipment, gift certificates, key chains, cups, water bottles, board games, and much more.  Prize donations can be dropped off at the Maize High School office to the attention of Becky Fitzmier or Laura Farney, or call 316-761-2677 (Becky) or 316-641-0586 (Laura) to make arrangements for pickup.
  • Volunteers: Volunteers are needed to make this event a success!  We have several committees so there should be something for everyone!  We have Bingo, Casino, Coat Check, Check-In, Games, Photo Booth/Weddings, Raffle Prizes, and Refreshments.Every year as seniors graduate we lose great parent volunteers. You do not have to be a parent of a Junior or Senior to volunteer.  If you would like more information, please contact Becky Fitzmier at 316-761-2677 or tbgmt@att.net, or Laura Farney at 316-641-0586 or lfarney@sbcglobal.net. Please considering giving your time!
  • We have created a Signup Genius to make signing up easier.

From the Finance Office
MHS Parents -
Please take a moment to log into Family Access and check your student's fee account.  Graduation is May 14th and all fees must be paid prior to May 12th for your senior to   receive his or her diploma.  It is possible that a fee may be added the last day your student attends if your student fails to turn in any type of school property (book, uniform etc.).  To make a payment, you may pay online or send a check to the school; however, no personal checks will be accepted after April 28th

If bills are not paid prior to May 12th, students will not receive their diplomas at the graduation ceremony.

Senior athletes will not receive their diplomas until their sports uniforms are checked in. Once all fees are paid/items turned in, students may pick up their diplomas from the Registrar.

If you have questions concerning any of these fees, you may contact Alysia Buckley at Maize High School - 316-722-0441.

Within Maize High School, we have a large population of students that are on the Autism Spectrum. Maize High School will have a spirit week supporting Autism Awareness on the week of April 3-7, 2017.

Spirit Week Themes:

Tuesday- Dress in your favorite cartoon or TV character

Thursday- Pajama Day
Friday- Hat day and Maize High Colors

In addition, Structured Learning staff members will decorate the commons area and hallways with colorful puzzle pieces with Autism information to support and show awareness for this special week. Structured Learning Classrooms will be selling blue autism bracelets for $1 during lunch time to support sensory items and community-based outings for instruction for our students on the Spectrum. If you would like to help support our classroom, please plan on purchasing a bracelet the week of April 3-7. Thanks for supporting Autism Awareness and Maize High School!
Yearbooks
Last chance for 2017 MHS Yearbooks! ! Below you will find information about ordering yearbooks AND purchasing senior ads in the 2017 MHS Yearbook.

How can I buy a yearbook?
Although our official yearbook sales due date was March 31, Jostens is allowing us to accept a limited number of additional yearbook orders through  April 28 . Yearbooks are  $40 ; cash or checks made out to MHS Yearbook may be sent to MHS or delivered to Anne Debes, yearbook adviser, in room F39. Yearbooks cannot be purchased through Fee Management on Skyward after March 31, but if you want to pay using a credit card, you can buy one through our Jostens link  jostensyearbooks.com   and selecting our school while supplies last.

Did I already pay for my 2017 yearbook?
Please contact Anne Debes, yearbook advisor, at adebes@usd266.com.

Do I have to pre-purchase a yearbook, or can I just wait and buy one when they arrive?
We have to know the number of yearbooks to order in advance; this is why yearbooks must be pre-purchased if you want to guarantee that you get one. We do usually have some extra yearbooks to sell at distribution time, but this is only if our publisher prints extra copies on their own-we never know how many, if any, will be printed as "extras" to sell. So pre-purchasing is the only way to make sure you get a yearbook!

What if I need financial assistance?
We do have some yearbooks set aside for students who receive free/reduced lunches. Please email yearbook advisor Anne Debes at  adebes@usd266.com  if you qualify for a free/reduced yearbook.

When will 2017 yearbooks be available for students?
The MHS yearbook covers the entire school year in one bound edition, so it is printed in the summer and available to students in early August. This means that 2017 graduates' books must be picked up in the MHS Front Office by the graduates themselves or by friends/family members. Students who bought yearbooks and still attend MHS will receive their books within the first week of school in August 2017.

How can I buy a Senior Ad in the yearbook?
All payments and information for senior ads MUST be turned in by April 15. We MAY still have a few senior ad spaces available; email
adebes@usd266.com   to check on this. Here is the senior ad info:
Please contact advisor Anne Debes at  adebes@usd266.com  if you have questions regarding any of this information. Thanks for supporting our student publication!
