MHS Parent Newsletter

November 2016                                          Volume  124  Issue  3

 Botts' Babbles

It has been a busy time at Maize High School! Students recently took the ACT (seniors) and ACT Aspire (sophomores and freshmen).  We are beginning to look at this data to help guide our instructional practices in an effort to continue and prepare our students for career and college readiness.  In early October, junior students were able to take the PSAT.  While these tests do each serve a purpose, I continue to impress upon both students and faculty that there is more to school- and certainly more to a student than a test score.  We will continue to emphasize building relationships with one another and impress upon all students character traits such as citizenship, compassion, respect, and grit.

The school board recently voted to approve boundaries for the district.  As a result, there will be an established feeder pattern that directly connects Maize Middle School to Maize High School.  We look forward to growing this partnership in the future.  The new policy also grants permission for current middle school students to preference which high school they would like to attend.  Any student who is new to the district will be assigned a school based upon which boundary they reside.  On the district website, you can access the tentative map that indicates where the boundaries are located.

The bond projects are really starting to take shape at MHS.  The athletic entrance and FEMA shelter are less than two weeks away from completion.  While the work has been a mess, our building has become both safer and more efficient.  I am excited to show off the completed work later this month.  The work on the softball and baseball fields is making great progress as well.  With these projects in the final stages, we are also gearing up for work to be done on the Career and Technical Education space that will be housed on the south and west end, of our building.  This work will commence later this fall.

With the school year already a quarter of the way done, it is a good time to send out a few reminders/notes:

  • I hope that you have all registered to vote and will do so on November 8th.

  • Congratulations to the students who earned their way onto the Honor Roll this term.  You can find their names throughout this newsletter.

  • Congratulations to Spencer Bosley!  Spencer won first place in the Maize Fall Festival voice contest!

  • We had a 37% turnout for our recent Parent Teacher Conferences.  Thank you to all who took the time to attend.  For your planning purposes, our next conferences will be held on February 15-16.

  • We are having a hat day on Monday, October 31st to support the Art Club and the Joe Pfannenstiel Scholarship.  Students can pay $1 to wear a hat on Halloween.  We ask that students do not wear costumes, masks, or face paint.

  • Thanksgiving Break is on the horizon.  Students will not have school on November 23-25.  Once students return from this break, there will be only three weeks left of the first semester.

  • We are still looking for a parent (or group of parents) to take charge of the After Prom committee.  If you are interested, please let any administrator know.

Students of the Month

I am pleased to announce that Alexis Cauthon has been named the Maize High School Carlos O'Kelly's Student of the Month for September. Mrs. Nitcher had this to say about Alexis: "Alexis is one of the most positive students I've had in my teaching career. She is kind, patient, eager to learn, and always has a beautiful smile on her face. She is a class leader and is ready to help her classmates whenever they need it."

For the month of October, Tori Moss has been named the Carlos O'Kelly's Student of the Month.  Mrs. Poole had this to say about Tori:  "Tori is involved in school through cheer and ProStart. Tori has a great attendance record and is so pleasant to be around. She is friendly to everyone, always has a "good morning" and a smile, and is a hard worker. She gives her best in class every day and is a very patient person. She is great at being a leader and a team member. I truly appreciate Tori's positivity!"

Also receiving nominations for September and October were Corrin Conway, Zach Tiemeyer, Lauren Nichols, Dalyn Johnson, Hassan Madi , Brett Loving, Lauren Voigt, Cameron Grimes, Brooklyn Harrison, Emma Wituk, Baylee Dobler, Zoey Knapp, Jon Kohl, Mia Magby, Brandon Lytle, and Hunter LaMunyon. Congratulations to each of these students and thank you for standing out!

High School Heisman

This year, Maize High School was fortunate to have two winners of the Wendy's High School Heisman Award.  We are proud to recognize both Ethan Pfeifer and Brecken Roe as this year's recipients.  In their honor, both Brecken and Ethan have been invited to a luncheon where they will be recognized for their efforts both in the classroom and on the field/court.

Maslow's Teen Pantry

Last month, I mentioned Maslow's Teen Pantry in my newsletter.  As the weather begins to get colder, I would like to remind you about this great initiative.  If you know of a student in need or would like to help through donations, please contact an administrator or counselor.

Maslow's Teen Pantry is organized by the Maize High School Peer Helper group. These teens have spent hours collecting and sorting through donations to help serve their school community.  At Maslow's, a student in need can seek out their counselor, administrator, or any teacher to receive items such as food, clothing, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, school supplies, and much more.  The idea is to help those in need in an anonymous fashion so that our students and their siblings can get what they need when they need it.  We are currently accepting donations of nonperishable food items (especially dry goods), gloves, hats, scarves, and jackets for the upcoming winter months.  Also, we are collecting baby items such as diapers, wipes, baby wash, etc.  There is not a need at this time for baby clothes.  As always, we are accepting cash donations as well.

The Addams Family

I want to recognize all of the students and staff who were part of the recent production at MHS, The Addams Family.  I know that countless hours were spent planning and preparing for the show.  It was a wonderful show and one that enjoyed by all who attended.

I appreciate all of the support given to our students and school.  Please let me know if I can do anything to help make your student's experience at Maize High School better.

With Eagle pride,

Dr. Botts

Sixty juniors recently toured Wichita State on our annual ACT testing day. USD 266 Maize offers Online Driver Education during the school year (Term 1; Term 2; Term 3; Term 4).   The online driver education program strives to prepare students to become knowledgeable and respectful of the law; to learn basic driving skills; and to develop a responsible attitude toward driving.   The instructors will provide critical experience to students; involve parents in the process, and foster cooperative interaction with others in the driving environment.   More detailed information on Online Driver Education can be found on the high school website under the Counselors' Corner.

KAY Club
KAY Club sponsored an American Red Cross Blood drive Oct. 12. The Red Cross collected 37 units of blood, two above the goal. "These extra two units are even more extremely helpful since we are facing such a shortage and trying to get units to help the area that was hit by Hurricane Matthew," said Lilly Steichen of the Red Cross.  KAY Club will host another blood drive March 14.

 MHS Co-ed Cheer
This year, MHS Cheer is expanding their program and has introduced Project Shine. This opportunity gives some of their new cheerleaders the chance to realize their potential, develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and develop friendships through the world of cheerleading. The sq uad has also been busy supporting MHS grad, Chris Leon, in his mission to promote Kansas Honor Flights. Finally, congratulations to MHS Cheer for taking first place for their float in the Maize Fall Festival Parade! The theme of the parade was "New Beginnings", and the squad's float was titled "Bloom Where You Are Planted".

 SADD

MHS SADD sponsored a recent two-day surprise Seat Belt Survey at Maize High. SADD was awarded a $2275

grant to have a Seatbelts Are For Everyone campaign at our school. Due to grant guidelines, SADD will sponsor additional events throughout the school year.

Thanks for making safety important!

 School Happenings

Biology students recently learned all about Ecology by constructing their own complex ecosystems - doing the same work that NASA scientists are currently completing to further humanity's plan to colonize and terraform Mars.

Pictured explaining their ecosystem design are Alaina Cunningham and
Keira Dobbs.

Freshmen General Science students used the Aurasma app and iPads to make an Augmented Reality (A/R) interactive wall display of all the concepts they learned in astronomy so far this year.
