Principal's Message

Hello MMS Eagle families,

We are getting to the end of our first nine weeks of this school year, with next week being the last week. We have learned a lot as we have gone through this Hybrid model. We will continue to evaluate and make adjustments to help students be successful in this model. Thank you for all you have done to support your student(s) these first nine weeks in the Hybrid model.

The one change for the start of the second nine weeks is that we will transition all 6th graders back to 4 days a week with a full-remote Wednesday. The first day of the second nine weeks is Monday, November 9th. The 7th and 8th graders will continue in the Hybrid Model for the second nine weeks. As we prepare for the return of all 6th graders we are working on plans to provide a smooth transition keeping in mind the safety of our students. As we develop strategies to continue providing a safe, supportive environment, we will continuously evaluate to determine if we need to make adjustments.

Our Fall Sports season was a little shorter than normal but we are thankful that we were able to get in the season. We definitely have had a lot of success in our fall sports, with our 7th-grade Football team going undefeated and 8th grade with only 1 loss. The 7th-grade Volleyball only had 1 loss in the season as well. Girls Tennis won several of their matches and Cross Country had numerous medalists at each of the meets. Way to go Eagles on a successful fall season. Thank you to the coaches for their dedication to our student-athletes. We are gearing up for the next season, which is a split season with Girls Basketball and Wrestling before the Winter Break and then Boys Basketball after the Winter Break.

We had a great Red Ribbon Week this week. We had fun activities during lunchtime which aligned with the information shared by the SADD group. Students showed their creativity with a poster contest and staff voted on the top posters with prizes for the winners. Thank you to SADD and Mrs. Ugues for providing a fun and engaging Red Ribbon Week. Another group to thank is our STUCO for putting together a virtual pep assembly since we are unable to gather as an entire student body. The pep assembly was an opportunity to recognize our different activity groups.

Thank you to the families that were able to participate in the virtual Parent/Teacher Conferences. We know this format had constraints that may have made it difficult for everyone to participate, however, if you ever have questions regarding your student, you may contact us anytime and do not need to wait until conferences. We are here for you.

Due to the virtual conferences, we were not able to have our typical book fair. The bookfair is a fundraiser that helps provide funding for the MMS library to purchase new books for our students to enjoy. To help continue raising funds, our fall book fair will be virtual. You can check it out here.

One Maize Receives Tremendous Donation from Walmart

Maize USD 266 received a very generous donation from our local Walmart at 21st and Maize. Zlatko Djurovic, a Maize parent and manager at Walmart along with colleague John Brown, teamed up with Paige Hill, assistant principal at Maize Middle School, and will be distributing over $20,000.00 worth of school supplies to the Maize schools (pre-K through 12th grade). The donated supplies will help provide students some of the essentials they need at school. The donation consisted of a variety of items, including: glue sticks, pencils, 3-ring binders, scissors, zipper binders, folders, and locker organizers. We are extremely grateful for our local Walmart and their community support.

Bus Driver Appreciation

MMS students got to appreciate our Bus Drivers with notes and cinnamon rolls from Moxi Junction! We are very thankful for all they do for us!

This year's KAY (Kansas Association for Youth) club has gotten off to a later start than past years but nonetheless is up and running. Currently, the club has 48 members, which is down from previous years but is a good number considering this school year's circumstances. The club has set up a google classroom and is planning virtual club zoom meetings so all members can attend and join in on the planning sessions.

   Right now, members are actively collecting money for the annual Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF event. This event will be done on an individual member basis rather than a whole group event. Members can still dress up in costumes when they collect, if they would like (this is optional).

   KAY still plans to have some Charity Hat days and fundraisers throughout the year along with some school-wide activities they've hosted in the past. Be on the lookout for events hosted by the KAY club this year.

   This year's KAY Board includes: Hadley Topping (President), Kaylen Blanpied (Vice-President), Maggie Carlo, Danny Nguyen, Kiley Gonazles, and Tammy Nguyen. Club members include the following:

   8th graders-Braden Wapp, Jane Carrol, Adria Dumler, Jalyn Gillispie, Layne Lowry-Hess, Vivian Summer-Levardi, Falyn Murrell, Chloe Conn, Aaron Harris, Miah Schumacher;

   7th graders-Aidyn Claibourn, Alexah Blanpied, Vanessa EnCinias, Mussaiel Sbhatu, Luck Schafer, Nicole Vance, Aubrey Hogan, Caileigh Allen, Alexis Craft, Taylor Dill, Madison Painter;

  6th graders-Jasey Fellers, Olivia Alarcon, Ryan Burch, Harmony Henderson, Emma Campbell, Marley Crawford, Mallory Roberts, Coralynn Allen, Addie Smith, Danner Bowers, Sophie Cox, Landon James, Nicole Aubuchon, Emi Bogner, Jalen Batiste, Jordan Palmer, Jaxson Hufford, Victoria, Newbrey, Ella McGrogan, Elijah Smith, Amarion Cook, Isaiah Williams.

Attendance/Tardies

Attendance Counts:

Regular attendance is necessary to fully realize the benefits of educational opportunities. Students are expected to be present and punctual for all classes throughout the year. The responsibility of school attendance is with the student and his/her parents. Parents/guardians should notify the school via our attendance line in the event the student will be absent. Excused absences include illness verified by a doctor, appointments with a doctors note, school sponsored activities, funerals or administrative approved absences. Due to the pandemicparents are encouraged to provide a doctors note for appointments and illnesses.

Nurse's Corner

I cannot believe the calendar page is turning to November!

We are working on vision and hearing screenings in the Health Office! All 6th and 8th graders will get a vision screening. All 7th graders will get a hearing screening. We will send written referral notifications to your home address if your student does not pass. If you receive a letter, please have your student evaluated by a professional.

Flu season is fast approaching. We encourage both you and your student to get your flu vaccine!

Thanks to all of you for continuing to do the daily self assessment for your student. We want all of our students to stay safe and healthy, and your help is greatly appreciated! As flu season approaches it is more important than ever to be diligent on this.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please call me at 350-2308 or email me at sfunk@usd266.com. We will do our best to help!

Stay healthy!!

Transportation-Did you know?

Busing FYI
