Maize Middle School News
Principal's Message

Good afternoon,

I hope all is well and that we have settled in for the 2 nd semester. We are now hitting our stride as we wrap up our first month of the new year.

Coming up in February we will have our student led conferences. Students were given the yellow student-led conference information sheet today during Encor. It explains the set-up of our conferences and the times available to choose for your own conference. Please take a look at the times available and mark your first, second, and third choices for your conference and return to your student’s EnCor teacher by Friday, February 7, 2020. We will do our best to accommodate your choices. The letter that was sent home is linked here for your convenience. Conference times are February 12 th 4:00pm-8:00pm and February 13 th 12:00pm-8:00pm. The students will not have school on February 13 th through February 17 th

I am excited to share that we have once again been nominated for Capturing Kids Hearts National Showcase School from the Flippen Group. The teachers have done a fabulous job of implementing the EXCEL model into their classrooms. I believe our teachers/staff already do a great job with building positive relationships with our students and the CKH model helps foster even a more positive relationship with each other throughout Maize Middle School. The EXCEL model is Engaging, eXploring, Communicating, Empowering and Launching with each piece just a part of the classroom flow from greeting kids at the door, sharing Good Things, journaling, empowering our kids in the classroom and ending the class with a positive launch before they go out into the halls for their next class. We were selected last year as a National Showcase School and hoping as we go through the process that they will recognize the great things we do and be selected again.

I hope you enjoy your Super Bowl weekend and GO CHIEFS!!

If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me.

Have a great day!
Brian

Attendance/Tardies

Attendance Counts:

Regular attendance is necessary to fully realize the benefits of educational opportunities. Students are expected to be present and punctual for all classes throughout the year. The responsibility of school attendance is with the student and his/her parents. Parents/guardians should notify the school via our attendance line in the event the student will be absent. Excused absences include illness verified by a doctor, appointments with a doctors note, school sponsored activities, funerals or administrative approved absences.  Parents are encouraged to provide a doctors note for appointments and illnesses.  Attendance letters will be mailed to parents of students with 5 or more absences during the semester and disciplinary actions can be taken.

Reference student handbook pages 5-8.

ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL ABSENCE AND TARDY COUNTS START OVER EACH TERM. Middle School Tardies-Being in class, prepared and ready to learn when the bell rings is a necessity. ● Parents may excuse their student for being late to the start of school three times with no consequence. ● After 3 tardies, per class period, the following applies: ○ Warning by administration ○ Lunch detention ○ 1-hour after-school detention ○ 2-hour after-school detention ○ 2-hour Saturday detention ○ 4-hour Saturday detention ○ In-School Suspension ○ Conference with parents and possible suspension. Unexcused Tardies: Students who are late to school without a parent call will be considered unexcused. At administrative discretion, the student may be assigned consequences if the student is persistent in being late to school, regardless of the reasons for the tardiness.

From the Nurse’s Office

*PLEASE READ!*

SKYWARD HEALTH INFORMATION

It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to update medical information and contact numbers in Skyward Family Access during enrollment AND throughout the school year. Teachers, coaches, and other school staff rely on Skyward for important health information like asthma, seizures, diabetes, and food allergies. In addition to updating Skyward, the parent/guardian must also personally communicate this information to the school nurse who will educate and train the appropriate staff. If parents and/or the student have questions regarding school guidelines and policies in keeping students safe and healthy at school, please contact the school nurse.

Just a reminder, if your student carries an inhaler, PLEASE be sure to have a doctor’s order on file with the nurse, AND label it with their name! We have quite a collection of lost inhalers that are not labeled. We know how expensive they are!

If we can help your student in any way, please just give us a call!

Stay healthy and warm!
Nurse Shelley

Administrative Excuse Form

Please notify the front office if your student will be out of school for 3 or more days in a row. The office has an administrative excuse form for the student to have all of his/her teachers sign for requesting homework while not in attendance.
