Our Reading and Discussion Series JCAL Reads will return for an engaging six-week run, sponsored by a Humanities New York Vision/Action Grant.
Centered on the work of four contemporary, community-based Black male authors, the latest iteration of JCAL Reads is called “You Cannot Define Me: The Black Man”. The series runs for six weeks, Tuesdays at 7 pm from Oct 24 - Nov 28.
The gatherings to read and discuss the award-winning published work of four Black male authors will take place in the black-box theater at the Jamaica Arts Center (161-04 Jamaica Avenue).
Free and open to the public, JCAL Reads is devoted to reading and discussing socially relevant and thought-provoking literature in a group setting.

New Date: This thrilling adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel chronicles the life of Oscar, an overweight science-fiction enthusiast who dreams of becoming the Dominican JRR Tolkien. Encapsulating magical realism and Dominican-American history, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao presents audiences with an astonishing vision of the contemporary American experience and explores the endless human capacity to persevere, and risk it all in the name of love.

Get ready for an incredible night of jazz music at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center! Our Jazz series "Thursday Night Jazz" presents cutting-edge contemporary jazz artists ranging from emerging to established talent on the scene.
Cameron Campbell (a.k.a. "mellotones") is a pianist, composer and producer from Worcester MA. His primary focus is Black American Music and music of the African Diaspora, as well as avant-garde and electronic music.

About the exhibition: Who are your ancestors and how do you honor them through your work? As artists, our creative practice grounds and nourishes our body, mind and spirit. There exists a source of energy and motivation that roots and fuels us to continue creating art. This exhibition is about honoring this source of energy through celebrating our roots, our past, our ancestors and the nourishment and inspiration they provide us to continue creating and telling our stories through art.

Meet the Playwright

Meet the Playwright features semi-staged readings of new works by BIIPOC playwrights, plus Q&As with creative teams.
About the Playwright: Chelsea Dai (she/they) is an emerging Chinese writer and artist based in New York and Los Angeles. She is currently studying Playwriting, Production Design, and Literature at UCLA.
Chelsea's works explore themes of Asian American communities and diaspora, womanhood, magical realism, dark comedy, and satire.
About the Play: In what seems like reality, Tina and Ting'an reflect on their shared memories and experiences. As their discussion escalates into boundary-breaking teases, and then a catastrophic fight that explores different genres of dances and martial arts, the truths of their existence, identity, and body are being revealed. In the aftermath of their war, they negotiate their co-existence in different realms of reality and fantasy.

JCAL Open Call

To welcome the return of our annual JCAL Open Call exhibition, Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning is seeking submissions of original artwork by Queens-based visual artists inspired by science fiction, fantasy, and horror.
All visual media is encouraged, including comics and zines, drawing and illustration, painting and sculpture, installation, video, new media, wearable art, cosplay, performance art, architecture, graphic design, and more.
This exhibition is open to all artists over the age of 13. Participating artists under 18 must have written consent from a parent or legal guardian. All artists will be compensated with a stipend of $250 and will have the opportunity to sell their work over the course of the exhibition.
