Major Life Changes

Jesus miraculously heals an unnamed blind man in our scripture lesson for this Sunday.
It is interesting that the blind man in our story does not ask to be cured. Did the blind man want to be sighted? Jesus doesn’t ask him. Jesus was walking with his disciples and he saw a man who had been blind from birth. After a theological discourse with his disciples on sin, God’s work, and light; he spits on the ground and makes mud with the saliva and spreads the mud on the man’s eyes telling him to go and wash in a pool of water.

If I had muddy saliva on my eyes I am sure I would have gone to the pool of water to wash it off as Jesus commanded. I can imagine the blind man’s surprise, when after washing up, he discovered he was now sighted. Now everything was going to be different. Everything was going to change for this man. The now sighted man no longer belongs to the “outcast” community of beggars.

I chose this passage of scripture because our church calendar designates this Sunday as “Disability Inclusion” Sunday. Where do “differently abled” persons in our neighborhood find a sense of inclusion and belonging? Could we be that place?

See you Sunday!
