New Wave of I-295 NJ-Bound Ramp Closures/Detours to Begin July 12
At Taylorsville Road in PA and Route 29 in NJ

The next major facet of Scudder Falls Bridge Replacement Project construction will entail around-the-clock closures/detours at three ramps on the Yardley side of the I-295/Taylorsville Road interchange (Exit 10) in Pennsylvania and at the
I-295 off-ramp to NJ Route 29 immediately after crossing the Scudder Falls Toll Bridge into New Jersey.

The four highway exit and entry ramps will be shut down with posted detours before the peak morning commuting period on Monday, July 12. Once instituted, the ramp closures and detours are expected to remain in place for five weeks – ending on or about Monday, August 16. (Note: Unfavorable weather conditions could potentially affect this schedule.)

All detours for the affected ramps at the I-295 EB/Taylorsville Road interchange will be via the Route 332/Yardley-Newtown Road interchange (Exit 8). The detour for the I-295 SB off-ramp to NJ Route 29 will be via the Scotch Road/CR-611 interchange (Exit-73A). Maps of the assigned detour routes are included in this communication.

Motorists who use the Scudder Falls Toll Bridge for travel from Pennsylvania into New Jersey are advised to expect delays and allow extra time to reach their destinations on Monday morning as weekday commuters adjust to the ramp closures and new detour routes.

Why the Ramp Closures Are Needed

The new travel restrictions will enable work crews to reconstruct the ramps prior to being put back into service with a new alignment of I-295 EB in Pennsylvania and I-295 SB in New Jersey. The new highway segment will feed NJ-bound I-295 traffic to and from the Scudder Falls Toll Bridge’s second parallel span, which is rapidly nearing completion immediately downstream of the span that opened in July 2019.

The reconstruction of the ramps will take place in coordination with work on the new sections of I-295 EB and SB, the new river bridge, and three smaller approach bridges – single-span structures across Taylorsville Road and the Delaware Canal in Pennsylvania and a larger two-span structure across the Route 29 northbound bypass roadway, the Delaware & Raritan Canal, and Route 175/River Road in New Jersey. The plan is to open all of these facilities together in a limited capacity on or about August 16.

Once the second bridge span and related facilities are brought online, the project will shift into the third and final stage of construction. The project is scheduled to reach substantial completion with the full complement of travel lanes and ramps in service sometime in mid- to late-December.
