LAAC in Action
Welcome Dhangur!

Dhangur joined LAAC in August 2019 as a Technology and Program Assistant. He is a second year student at UC Berkeley studying Data Science with a focus in Social Policy and Law. He's also involved with his Punjabi Sikh community through his volunteer work with organizations like Jakara. He is excited to work with analytics and assist the LawHelpCA team.  In his free time, he enjoys playing basketball and lifting.

Join us in welcoming Dhangur to the LAAC team! You can reach him at  dsingh@laaconline.org.
LAAC Advocacy Update

On September 4, 2019, Governor Newsom signed  AB 330  (Gabriel), expanding funding for legal aid programs on the 10th anniversary of the original 2009 Sargent Shriver Civil Counsel Act. The bill provides funding to legal aid organizations to focus on critical issues, like child custody and eviction defense, impacting low-income Californians across the state, leveling the playing field and increasing access to civil counsel.

The State Bar of California Task Force on Access Through Innovation in Legal Services  recommendations  are still out for public comment through September 23rd. LAAC will be submitting a letter by the middle of September. Get in touch with LAAC's Research Attorney, Zach Newman ( znewman@laaconline.org  ) for more info or to suggest ideas or concerns to include in our letter.
Giving Tuesday!

With the giving season right around the corner, please keep the Legal Aid Association of California on your list and spread the word! Our goal is to raise $5,000 this season. Your gift will help cover the costs needed to fund Dan Bradley Fellows, organize "Legal Aid Day in Sacramento," host free trainings for legal aid attorneys, and more. To donate between now and Giving Tuesday (December 3rd), please visit our donation page!

Thank you so much for joining us in our mission to support the legal aid community statewide and see to it that all Californians experience fair access to the justice system.
Save the Date!

Thank you to San Joaquin College of Law for hosting the April 2020 NITA Training! LAAC is still working to secure space for a NITA Trial Program in December 2019. Stay tuned for updates about those dates!

If you would like be added to the wait list for the December 2019 or April 2020 training please email LAAC Training Associate, Jenna Mowat, at jmowat@laaconline.org.
Self-Care Corner

Summer isn't officially  over until the 21st! Here are some things you can do to practice self-care during these last few gasps of summer:
  • Buy yourself fresh flowers! You don't need a special occasion to buy flowers. Enjoy the last of the summer blooms and treat yourself to a colorful bouquet.

  • Spend time outside. Take a selfie outside in the last of the summer light, or invite friends to that summer picnic you've been meaning to host.

  • Dry clean your comforter and winter coat. Okay, so California doesn't get too cold but soon the air may begin to feel cooler and crisper. Take advantage of the warmer weather to wash the items that you may not need now, but will be grateful for in a few months.
Don't wait until next year to fulfill your required CLE:
