Make A Difference Day: Gimmick Or...Do We Perhaps We Need Days Like This?

Every year, Make a Difference Day invites people across the country to perform acts of kindness and service within their communities. Since it began in 1992, millions of people have participated in projects ranging from neighborhood cleanups and food drives to simple gestures of generosity toward friends, neighbors, and even complete strangers.

And yet, if we're honest, many people probably have the same first reaction.

"Do we really need a day for this?"

After all, shouldn't we be making a difference every day?

Some of us may see these observances as gimmicks. Others, may roll their eyes at what seems like an endless list of awareness days filling the calendar. It can feel as though every week brings another reminder to celebrate, recognize, or support something. If these days become nothing more than hashtags, social media posts, or opportunities for businesses to promote themselves, it's understandable why some people wonder whether they accomplish anything at all.

But perhaps we've been asking the wrong question.

Maybe the purpose of these days is not to tell us something we don't already know.

Maybe they're simply there to remind us of something we've forgotten.

Because life has a way of doing that.

Between work, bills, endless emails, family responsibilities, appointments, health concerns, and the constant stream of news from around the world, it is easy to become overwhelmed. Most people don't stop caring because they lack compassion. More often, they simply become busy trying to keep up with life itself.

Days like Make a Difference Day gently interrupt that rhythm.

They invite us to pause—not to escape reality, but to step back from it for a moment. To remember the kind of people we hope to be. To remind us that even in ordinary circumstances, we still have the ability to influence another person's life.

That reminder may be more important now than ever.

When there is so much that feels beyond our control.

Few of us can solve homelessness.

Few can heal the political divisions that surround us.

Few can end wars, eliminate poverty, reverse loneliness, or fix the many injustices that weigh on our hearts.

Living with that reality can leave us feeling powerless. And when people feel powerless long enough, discouragement often follows.

But perhaps Make a Difference Day reminds us not of what we cannot do, but of what we can.

We can visit the parent we've been meaning to see.

We can forgive the friend we've quietly avoided.

We can write the thank-you note, e-mail, or text that has been sitting in our hearts for months...or longer.

We can bring a meal to someone who is exhausted.

We can learn the name of the person we pass every morning.

We can check in on a grieving neighbor.

We can choose patience when frustration would be easier.

None of these actions will solve every problem in the world. But they might completely change someone's day. Or someone's week. Perhaps even someone's life.

Imagine if one hundred people embraced this seemingly simple invitation:

  • One hundred phone calls.
  • One hundred reconciliations.
  • One hundred moments of encouragement.
  • One hundred quiet acts of kindness whose effects continue long after this particular day has passed.

Like ripples spreading across still water, small acts often travel farther than we ever realize.

Of course, the goal isn't to make a difference for one day each year. The hope is that one intentional act becomes another, and then another, until kindness becomes less of an event and more of a habit.

Sometimes lasting change begins with nothing more than one small decision repeated over time.

A Simple Invitation

As a small way of celebrating Make a Difference Day, we've created a Make a Difference Bingo—not as another item to check off a list, but as a -hopefully fun- invitation to notice the opportunities for kindness that already surround us.

Most actions on it will take only five minutes. Whether you complete one square, one row, or simply let one idea inspire you, our hope is the same: that one small act of compassion might become the beginning of a new habit.

Because making a difference rarely starts with extraordinary gestures. It usually begins with something wonderfully ordinary.

So... download the Make a Difference Bingo, choose a place to begin, and see where one small act might lead. Have fun with it...make this day count! :)

Imagine what might happen if enough people chose to embrace this day...and not as a once-a-year gimmicky event, but as a gentle reminder of the difference each of us is still capable of making.

Sometimes all it takes is one small act...

...to begin changing the world, one life at a time.
