November in the Chicago Southland!

This November, the Chicago Southland has harvested a feast of fun for you to enjoy. Read our comfort food blog; take a holiday themed run; celebrate at a cultural event; recognize Veterans Day; check out local pet shops and find some upcoming events.

Cozy Up With Comfort Food

Each November, folks can usually be sorted into one of two categories: the ones stressing over mile-long grocery lists in an attempt to master grandma’s famous stuffing recipe, and the ones sitting back and letting someone else handle the cooking. While we support our culinary magicians, we also fully endorse the latter group! After all, there is an abundance of incredible restaurants throughout the Chicago Southland serving up top-tier food year-round.

With sweater weather officially here, now’s the perfect time to indulge in a little comfort food. And while Thanksgiving may be the main event this month, there’s no need to wait for a designated Thursday to treat yourself to a feast! Before the holiday madness officially takes over, abandon that shopping cart and pull up a chair at one of the cozy comfort food staples in our blog!

Take a Turkey Trot

On November 7th, tap your talons along in the 33rd Annual Orland Hills Turkey Trot Race! This annual run is a Chicago Southland staple, and it's a great way to get ready for Thanksgiving! Participants can grab a free sweatshirt while supplies last, as well as an award for the overall winners in each division.

Get in the Christmas spirit at the Reindeer Run on November 14th at Brookfield Zoo Chicago, where you can walk, jog or run a three-mile course around the zoo under the Holiday Magic lights.

Orland Park will also be hosting their Turkey Trot on November 26th at the Franklin Loebe Center.

Cultivate Some Culture

Take some time this November to celebrate and learn about the cultures and communities that make the Chicago Southland what it is.

Check out the Gratitude Gathering, a reflective event on gratitude and sharing cultural teachings about thankfulness on November 7th. Presented with the American Indian Center at the Sand Ridge Nature Center in South Holland.

Also taking place on the 7th, Dia De Los Muertos in Uptown Blue Island promises to celebrate Day of the Dead with a remembrance altar, music, dancing, food and shopping.

On November 14th at the Homewood Public Library, take part in Journeying Through The Native American Indian Way of Life, where author Kim Sigafus leads a discussion on Illinois Native Americans of the 1800s and their culture.

Veterans Day

November 11th is Veterans Day, a day to remember those who have and continue to serve our country. Take a look at some of these opportunities to commemorate our brave service members.

On November 7th, you can attend the Veterans Day Parade in Richton Park, as well as the Veterans Day Community Experience in Park Forest. Head to Konow's Farm in Homer Glen on November 8th for a Veterans Day Celebration including food, fun and music.

Lynwood will host a Veterans Luncheon on November 10th. On November 11th, you can attend Veterans Day Ceremonies in Monee, Palos Park and Forest View.
